In battle between number ones, visiting Marauders fall on road to Beavers 4-1

MINOT, ND – The University of Mary's hopes for a second straight win over Minot State University were dashed by a pair of third period goals in a meeting between the nation's top-ranked teams in the top two divisions of the American Collegiate Hockey Association.  Ranked first in ACHA M2, the visiting Marauders dropped a 4-1 decision to the Beavers, ranked first in ACHA M1.

The Marauders eight-game win streak was snapped as UMary falls to 28-5-1 on the season. It was their first loss in 2023. Two of the five losses came on the road while playing up a division at Minot State. The Beavers are 23-1 with their lone loss on the road to the Marauders.

In another hard-fought game between the two Highway 83 rivals, the Beavers scored the only goal of the opening period just 3:46 into the contest on a tally by Sheldin Howard.

The Marauders pulled even in the second period on a power play goal at the 1:52 mark. Working the puck around the perimeter, Seth Cushing ripped a shot from atop the right circle but his effort was turned away. Jaren Huglen picked up the rebound to the right of the net on the end line and slid the puck through the crease to Tanner Eskro on the left side of the goal. Taking the feed at the bottom of the circle, Esko never hesitated and fired the puck into the wide open net to knot the game at 1-1 on his 11th goal of the season.

Taking advantage of their own power play later in the second, the Beavers regained the lead at 11:57 on the first of two Carter Barley goals.

Minot State ensured the Marauders wouldn't find the equalizer by tacking on two goals in the second half of the third period, the fourth and last goal by Barley with 63 seconds left in the game.

Conan Hayton, who backstopped the Marauders to their only win over the Beavers earlier in the season, posted 45 saves in the game for UMary. He made 35 saves in the Marauders 3-2 win over the Beavers on December 3, 2022, the last meeting between the two teams.

Jake Anthony finished with 20 saves for Minot State as the Beavers held a 49-21 edge in shots.

Both teams finished 1-for-2 on the power play as both had identical marks of five penalties for 26 minutes in the last meeting between the two teams playing at two different levels. UMary makes the move up to join Minot State at the ACHA M1 level in the 2023-24 season.

The Marauders wrap up their weekend with a road game at Williston State College on Sunday, January 22. Face off is set for 5 pm between the Marauders and the Tetons.
