Marauders open second half of NSIC season at home against Peacocks, Warriors

THIS WEEK
The University of Mary returns home to host a weekend series against Northern Sun South Division foes Upper Iowa University and Winona State University in the final crossover games at the McDowell Activity Center this season. The Marauders open the 2-game set against the Peacocks on Friday, January 20, at 5:30. The homestand concludes Saturday, January 21, with the Marauders and the Warriors tipping off at 3:30 pm. | PLEASE NOT THE EARLIER START TIMES AS THE NSIC MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TEAMS SWAP START TIMES THIS WEEKEND (JANUARY 20-21) AS THE MEN PLAY FIRST FOLLOWED BY THE WOMEN.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Marauders dropped a pair of NSIC road contests last weekend… Kam Warrens scored a career-high 26 points in a 77-70 loss at Augustana. He hit four treys and all six free throws while grabbing seven rebounds. Treyton Mattern was 3-for-5 on treys and scored 13 points and Gertautas Urbonavicius added  11 points… Jeremiah Jones just missed what would have been the third double double of his freshman season with 10 points and nine rebounds in a 72-52 loss at Wayne State College. Gunner Swanson added a career-high nine points by making 3-of-5 treys.  
 
RECORDS
The Marauders enter the weekend 8-8 overall and 4-8 in the NSIC… Upper Iowa is 10-8 overall and 7-5 in the NSIC… Winona State is 10-7 overall and 5-7 in the NSIC.  
 
"MEN HAVE FIRST" STARTING JANUARY 20
Starting this weekend (January 20-21), the men take the court first in all Northern Sun doubleheaders with the women playing the late game. Start times for UMary men's games are 5:50 pm on Fridays and 3:30 pm on Saturdays with the women's game starting 20 minutes after the conclusion of the early game. This is the second straight season the NSIC has followed this format.
 
MIDPOINT
The Marauders crossed the midpoint of the Northern Sun season last weekend. NSIC teams have played 12 games with 10 remaining. The UMary schedule is evenly split with five home and five away games left on the docket.  
 
HISTORY LESSON – MARAUDERS v. PEACOCKS
The Marauders are 8-12 all-time against the Peacocks… Upper Iowa is 8-3 at home in Dorman Gym… Last  two games were played at UIU, both wins by the Peacocks… UMary is 5-4 at the McDowell Activity Center against UIU… The last game played at the MAC was an 85-71 win for the Marauders on February 7, 2020. Jaylen White led the Marauders with 21 points… The Peacocks have won eight of the last 11 meetings with the Marauders | LAST MEETING Kai Huntsberry posted 26 points and the Marauders hit 11 treys in an 82-72 road loss to #20 Upper Iowa on January 29, 2022. Jake Hillmer led UIU with 29.
 
HISTORY LESSON - MARAUDERS v. WARRIORS
The Marauders are 2-22 all-time against the Warriors… UMary is 1-9 all-time at the MAC against Winona State… WSU is 13-1 at home against UMary, including 3-1 in the NSIC tournament… The Marauders lost the first seven games of the series before winning 87-85 in overtime at home on 1.3.10 behind 29 points from Anthony Moody. The All-American hit 5-of-6 3-point attempts and captured NSIC Player of the Week honors for his efforts… LAST MEETING After dropping an 89-78 regular decision at WSU on January 28, 2022. Less than a month later the Marauders returned to Winona, MN, on February 23 for the opening round of the NSIC tournament and dumped the Warriors 82-70. The win was just the 2nd all-time for the Marauders over the Warriors and snapped Winona State's 15-game win streak over UMary. the Marauders returned less than a month later for a decision The Warriors have won 14 straight games over the Marauders. Kai Huntsberry scored 29 points in the win, Gertautas Urbonavicius had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Kam Warrens scored 12 and Davids Atelbauers 11 to send the Marauders to the NSIC quarterfinals.
 
500
Kam Warrens cracked the 500 point club last weekend for the Marauders when he scored a career-high 26 points at Augustana. The senior has scored 511 points in his three seasons at UMary, covering 57 games.
 
BALANCE
The Marauders feature six players scoring between 13.3 ppg and 6.9 ppg, with five players averaging at least 8.4 ppg. Kam Warrens leads the way at 13.3 ppg… Zyon Smith is close behind at 11.8 ppg in his first season at UMary… Treyton Mattern is at 10.8 ppg. Gertautas Urbonavicius checks in at 9.6 ppg with Lucas Mayer at 8.4 ppg and Jeremiah Jones at 6.9 ppg. 
 
HELPING HAND
The Marauders are averaging 15.2 assists per game to rank 63rd in the country and 2nd in the NSIC.  
 
PICKPOCKET
Freshman Jeremiah Jones is 4th in the NSIC in steals (1.5/game). Treyton Mattern is 18th in steals at 1.2/game.
 
FOR THREE!
The Marauders are knocking down 37.2% of their 3-point attempts this season to rank 4th in the Northern Sun and 63rd in NCAA Division II. Opponents are connecting on just 35.2% of their attempts from behind the arc. Gunner Swanson leads the way at 45.85 (11-of-24). Gertautas Urbonavicius (16-of-36) is close behind at 44.4% with Kam Warrens (26-of-62) at 41.9%... Zyon Smith makes 1.9 3s/game to lead UMary. He is 17th in the NSIC. Warrens is 24th at 1.63s/game.
 
TAKING TURNS
Six different Marauders have led UMary in scoring this season: Kam Warrens (6x), Treyton Mattern (3x), Zyon Smith (3x), Lucas Mayer (2x), Gertautas Urbonavicius (2x) and Jeremiah Jones.
 
SHARE THE LOAD
The Marauders rank third in the NSIC in rebounds/game at 37.6 and it's a team effort. Kam Warrens leads UMary in rebounds/game (5.8) and is 20th in the league, followed Jeremiah Jones (5.7) at #21 and Gertautas Urbonavicius (5.4) at #25.
 
SECOND CHANCE CITY
The Marauders are third in the NSIC in offensive rebounds at 10.69. Lucas Mayer leads the second chance efforts with 2.31 offensive boards/game, sixth-most in the NSIC.
 
DOUBLING DOWN
Halfway through his freshman season, Jeremiah Jones has two double doubles. He had 15 points and 16 rebounds against Minot State. In the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Tournament championship game Jones dropped 11 points and ten rebounds. The guard from South Holland, IL, has also been a tremendous distributor with eight assists against Presentation and seven against PR-Bayamon… For the season he is averaging 6.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists. He is shooting 81.5% (22-of-27) at the free throw line… Jones leads the Marauders in assists and steals and is second in rebounds… He ranks 21st in the NSIC in rebounding, 10th in assists and 4th in steals (1.5/game).
 
DOUBLE DOUBLE
The Marauders have registered four double doubles this season:

CENTURY STANDOUTS
The Marauders start a pair of Bismarck Century High School graduates in forward Lucas Mayer and Treyton Mattern. Both are second generation Marauders as their fathers played for UMary. Mayer's father Dave played on the Marauders 1981-82 Men's Basketball Hall of Fame team that set a school record for wins. Mattern's mother (Gerene Saylor Mattern) is a member of the Marauders Hall of Fame for her exploits on the track. And Mattern's father, Darren, coached both Mayer and Mattern at Century HS.
 
DEBUTS
Seven Marauders made their UMary debuts in the season opener against Presentation. Zyon Smith (Highland CC) transferred to UMary before the start of the season. After redshirting last season for UMary, Gunner Swanson came off the bench for the Marauders. Freshmen Marquel Saleek, Jeremiah Jones, Xavier Lewis and Ty Rogers all made their collegiate debuts this season.
 
RETURNING
The Marauders have six players back who saw considerable action last season, including four from the starting rotation.
  • Sr. F Gertautas Urbonavicius started all 27 games and was second on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg… averaged 4.8 rebounds/game… shot 47%from the floor and 41% on treys.
  • Sr. F Kam Warrens started 26 of 27 games… averaged 8.7 points/game and team-high 6.1 rebounds/game
  • Sr. F Lucas Mayer started last 12 games of the season after returning from injury… averaged 6.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game… shot team-leading 68.8% from the floor
  • Jr. G Treyton Mattern started 14 of the 18 games he played… averaged 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds/game… 3rd on team with 1.7 assists/game.
  • Sr. F Veljko Radakovic was a key reserve for the Marauders on the front line, playing in 19 games. He averaged 2.5 ppg.
  • Jr. G Deven Franks saw significant minutes in the back court last season, playing in 18 games and starting three games… Averaged 2.4 ppg.
  • Soph. F Liam Dougherty was limited to six games as a freshman.
  • Fr. G Gunner Swanson redshirted last season at UMary
 
NEW
Zyon Smith lead a group of seven new players for the Marauders, six of whom are freshmen… Smith averaged 14.2 ppg and shot over 43% from the field for Highland Community College last season to earn 2nd team Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference honors.
 
Freshmen for 2022-23 includes guards Colton Hall, Jeremiah Jones and Marquel Saleek and forwards Xavier Lewis, Payton Mogire and Ty Rogers.
 
YEAR TWO
Head coach Jack Nelson returns for his season with the Marauders after leading UMary to their best conference record since 2017. Nelson directed the Marauders to their first Northern Sun tournament road victory with an 82-70 win at Winona State to send UMary to the quarterfinals and a trip to the Sanford Pentagon. During the regular season the Marauders defeated #6 University of Minnesota Duluth 75-71, the highest ranked NCAA team UMary has beaten at home. Nelson recruited and coached Kai Huntsberry, the 2021-22 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and a 1st team all-conference selection who broke the NSIC tournament record for 3s in a game with eight.
