Second period outburst lifts Marauders to opening weekend sweep of Waldorf and 22nd straight win

MANDAN, ND – Seven University of Mary skaters scored goals with Liam Massie finding the net twice as the Marauders overwhelmed Waldorf University 8-2 to complete the weekend sweep. The victory is the 22nd straight win for two-time defending national champion UMary in a streak that dates back to last season.

The series against Waldorf is a precursor to UMary's 2023-24 schedule. The Marauders will join the Warriors in ACHA Men's Division 1 competing in the Midwest College Hockey league. UMary improves to 3-0 all-time against Waldorf.

For the second straight game, Tucker Kruse opened the scoring for the Marauders. Seconds after a spectacular save by Waldorf goaltender Cade Kujawski on an Alex Flicek scoring attempt, Flicek slid a pass to the right side of the net for Kruse to tap home at the 10:37 mark.

With UMary skating shorthanded, Liam Massie doubled the Marauders lead to 2-0 on an end to end rush. Picking up the puck in the UMary defensive zone, Massie raced down the ice and held off a defender to score his first Marauders goal from the bottom of the right circle.

The Marauder scored four times in the second to secure their second straight win to start the 2022-23 season.

At 5:04 of the middle stanza, John Dapron tapped home the puck from the left of the net for his first goal with the Marauders off assists from Lucas Medeiros and Derek Dropik.

Just 40 seconds later that same trio increased the UMary lead to 4-0. Medeiros hit Dropik on a breakaway and the Alexandria, MN, native outskated the Warriors defenders and buried the puck for his first goal of the season.

Waldorf ended the UMary run of ten straight goals over the two games at 7:25 when the Warriors converted on a power play opportunity.

The Marauders responded with a power play goal of their own by Massie at 13:11 before Cyril Nagurski tallied an unassisted goal with 62 seconds left to send UMary into the second intermission with a 6-1 lead.

UMary tacked on two more goals in the third. All-American Johnny Witzke scored a power play goal and Caleb Petrie scored his first Marauders goal one game after dishing three assists in his UMary debut.

In his first start of the year, Conan Hayton stopped 9-of-10 shots for UMary. Zach White played the third period in net for the Marauders and saved three of the four shots he faced in his college debut.

UMary dominated the shot chart 50-14 and went 2-for-6 on the power play. Waldorf scored once in nine chances with a man advantage.

The Marauders next make their first road trip of the season with a trio of games at the University of Minnesota Showcase, facing Marian University on Friday, Sept. 30, host Minnesota on Saturday, Oct. 1, and Liberty University on Sunday, Oct. 2.
