Timely hitting woes costs Marauders in home opener losses to Warriors

BISMARCK, ND – Austin Wagner struck out nine batters in the University of Mary home opener and Derek Shoen and Krece Papierski both had three hits in game two but a lack of timely hitting left the Marauders short in both ends of their Northern Sun doubleheader with visiting Winona State University. The Warriors captured the opener 3-1 and rallied for a 7-4 victory in game two as the Marauders stranded 24 baserunners in the two games.

SCHEDULE UPDATE |  The University of Mary baseball game against Winona State University scheduled for Sunday, April 3, is cancelled due to snow on the field. The Marauders are next scheduled to host Concordia-St. Paul on Wednesday, April 6. First pitch in the Northern Sun doubleheader is slated for 1:30 pm at Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, ND.

GAME 1 | Winona State 3 University of Mary 1
Another tremendous outing by UMary lefty Austin Wagner was marred by a pair of home runs. The junior struck out nine Warriors and allowed just four hits and a walk in six innings. Unfortunately two of the hits left the park to account for all three Winona State runs.

The Warriors scored twice in the first inning when Carter Brinkman hit a two-out two-run shot over the left-center field fence.

A trio of Warriors pitchers made the two runs hold up. Starter Kyle Gendron gave up one unearned run in four innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out six. Caleb Strack struck out six in two innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Peter Tveite pitched a scoreless seventh. Combined the three Warriors limited the Marauders to five hits and two walks while striking out 13 in seven innings.

PIVOT POINT
The Marauders had several opportunities to score. In the second. Noah Hull tripled to right with one out but was stranded when the next two hitters struck out.

In the fifth, UMary loaded the bases with no outs and scored on a bases loaded walk to Hull. A pop out and two strikeouts left the Marauders trailing 2-1. After a Derek Baumgartner home run in the sixth pushed Winona State lead to 3-1, the Marauders opened the home half of the sixth inning with singles by Derek Shoen and Hull. Both advanced into scoring position but were left stranded as the next three hitters struck out.

GAME 2 | Warriors 7 Marauders 4
UMary starter Kody Jones pitched five scoreless innings and the Marauders jumped out to a 2-0 lead but a pair of big innings by the Warriors proved too much to overcome for UMary.

Shoen singled in a run in the third and Papierski did the same in the fifth. Jones, who allowed three hits, no walks and struck out seven, turned the ball over to the bullpen to start the sixth inning. Liam Sommer pitched a scoreless inning before being touched for a 3-run home run in the seventh. WSU then scored another three in the eighth and one in the ninth.

A Shoen homer and a Braxton Inniss walk with the bases loaded pulled the Marauders within 7-4 to bring the winning run to the plate before the Warriors recorded the final out of the game on a fly ball to right.

PIVOT POINT
The Marauders posted single runs in each of the third and fifth innings to build a 2-0 lead. UMary's advantage evaporated in the seventh inning on a 3-run home run by Kapanke. Winona State added on three more in the eighth inning, the big blow a 2-run single by Beyer. It was the first time the Warriors had scored on anything other than a home run.
