UMary drops doubleheader to UF, DU

WINTER HAVEN, FL – The University of Mary softball team (1-14) dropped their doubleheader on day two of the Spring Games in Winter Haven, FL. UMary lost 7-6 in a close game to the University of Findlay and would go on to lose 12-4 to Davenport University.

GAME 1 University of Findlay 7 University of Mary 6
UF grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Marauders responded with a run of their own after Devyn Ritz singled to center field, scoring Brooke De Jonge.

UMary exploded for five runs in the second inning. Kaylee Kannegiesser hit a single to score Eryn De Jonge. Madison Wszolek followed that with a double to right field, which brought home Kannegiesser.

Brooke De Jonge kept the momentum going after she singled to second, scoring Wszolek. Haley Berube added on another run after she hit a single to left field which brought home De Jonge. Ritz capped off the scoring, hitting a single to left field to score Sariah Perez.

Pivot Point
The Oilers cut the Marauders lead to 6-3 after a two-run homer in the fifth inning. UF took a 7-6 lead after scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Marauders had two runners reach in the sixth and seventh innings but failed to bring them home as UMary would fall 7-6 to UF.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

·       Haley Berube went 2-for-3 with one walk and one RBI

·       Devyn Ritz went 2-for-4 while driving in two runs

·       Kaylee Kannegiesser went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored

·       Erin Murphy went 2-for-4

STAT OF THE GAME
Brooke De Jonge went 3-for-4 while driving in one run and scoring twice.

GAME 2 Davenport University 12 University of Mary 4 (F/5)
UMary took the lead in the top of the first inning after Devyn Ritz doubled to center field, which scored Brooke De Jonge. A pair of three-run homers in the bottom of the first and second innings gave DU a 6-1 lead.

Sariah Perez cut the lead to 6-3 in the top of the third after she singled center field, scoring Erin Murphy and De Jonge. The Panthers took control in the bottom of the third inning after scoring five runs. DU added on an insurance run in the fourth inning, giving the Panthers a 12-3 lead.

The Marauders would get one run back in the fifth inning after Devyn Ritz singled to the shortstop, which brought home Murphy. DU would not allow another UMary run and earned the 12-4 win.
