Heckaman, Garrett tally twice in 6-2 victory as #1 Marauders win streak grows to 14

CROOKSTON, MN – A pair of goals by both Andrew Heckaman and Zach Garrett plus a trio of assists by Tanner Eskro led the #1 University of Mary to a 6-2 win at the University of Minnesota Crookston. The victory was the 14th straight for the Marauders, tying the mark for the second-longest win streak in program history.

The Marauders improve to 32-4-1-2 with one game remaining in the regular season. UMary owns a 31-2-0-2 against ACHA M2 teams this year and hasn't lost to an M2 team since October 15, 2021. UMC is 15-9-2.

The 14 straight wins is one short of the team record set when the Marauders won their first 15 games in program history (Fall 2018).

Heckaman opened the scoring for the Marauders when the defenseman tallied at the 8:49 mark of the first period. Less than three minutes later, Seth Cushing scored a power play goal to give UMary a 2-0 lead at 11:06.

The Golden Eagles struck with 5:17 remaining in the opening period on a Nathan Huot goal to close the UMC gap to 2-1 at the first intermission.

The two teams traded goals in the second, with Garrett scoring his 1st of two goals on the night at 15:46. UMC closed within a goal once again when Jackson Fuller found the net at 18:19 for a 3-2 score at the end of the period.

UMary skated away with the win with a big third period. Johnny Witzke, who assisted on the first goal, scored himself at 5:32 to double the Marauders lead. Heckaman posted his second goal of the game at 10:12 before Garrett followed at 14:56 to close the scoring.

The Marauders held a 57-34 edge in shots. UMary All-American Kyle Hayden turned away 32 shots by the Golden Eagles. Jared Aamold made 51 saves for UMC.

Garrett finished with four points as the reigning ACHA Player of the Year had two goals and two assists. Eskro was second on the team with three points on three assists. Heckaman joined Garrett with two goals and fellow defenseman Johnny Witzke had a goal and an assist. Kyler Moore chipped in two assists. Overall nine Marauders registered points in the game.
