Moore delivers twice as Marauders drop Hoosiers 4-1 to remain undefeated at ACHA M2 tourney

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO – The University of Mary extended its program-record win streak to 17 games behind a pair of Kyler Moore goals and another smothering defensive effort as the defending champion Marauders continued the defense of their title. Scoring in each period and only allowing a late meaningless goal, the UMary defeated Indiana University 4-1 in the second round of pool play at the 2022 American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2 national tournament.

The Marauders are one game away from advancing out of Pool D and into the ACHA M2 semifinals. In a meeting between two undefeated teams, #1 seed UMary next faces #2 seed Northeastern University. The Marauders and the Huskies are slated to face off at 8:45 pm on Wednesday, March 16, from the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, MO.

UMary improved to 35-4-1-2 (W-L-OTL-T) overall this season. Against ACHA M2 teams the Marauders are 33-2-0-2 this season without a loss to an M2 team since October 15, 2021.

The Marauders took advantage of a Hoosiers penalty to open the scoring midway through the first period. Skating with a man advantage, Kyler Moore blasted a shot from the left circle that went wide of the net. Picking up the puck on the right side, Zach Garrett fired the puck along the boards behind the net back to Moore. Left all along, Moore took advantage of his second opportunity and found the back of the net at 9:13 for a 1-0 lead.

Despite the Marauders controlling play and glancing at least two shots off the pipes, the only goal of the opening period belonged to Moore.

One night after lighting the lamp three times in an 8-0 win over the University of Wisconsin to open pool play, Seth Cushing kept up a red-hot scoring pace with a tournament-leading fourth goal. Skating four aside with a player for both teams in the penalty box, Marshall Tschida slid the puck across the slot to Cushing in the left circle. Left unattended, Cushing buried the puck without hesitation at the 6:05 mark to double the UMary lead to 2-0.

While the Marauders failed to take advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity to increase their lead, UMary also killed off three power play opportunities for Indiana in the second period.

Moore struck again early in the 3rd period to give the Marauders a 3-0 cushion. Sitting atop the slot, Moore hammered home a feed from Johnny Witzke.

Following an Indiana goal with 1:53 to play, Justin Ohnstad scored on a breakaway 16 seconds later to cement the UMary win.

Conan Hayton stopped 21 of the 22 shots he faced from the Hoosiers to earn the win in net for the Marauders. Sammy Billis had 20 saves for Indiana.

Garrett, Tschida and Andrew Heckaman all had two assists for the Marauders.

The Marauders are 7-0 all-time at the ACHA M2 national tournament, outscoring the opposition 35-3.

In Tuesday's other game in Pool D, Northeastern University defeated the University of Wisconsin 7-1. After the second day of pool play, the Marauders and Northwestern University are 2-0. Indiana and Wisconsin are 0-2. In addition to the Marauders-Huskies meeting, the final day of Pool D play features Indiana and Wisconsin skating against each other with both Big 10 schools looking for its first tourney win.
