WINONA, MN - The University of Mary tennis team (1-0, 1-0 Northern Sun) edged out Winona State University (2-2, 1-1 NSIC) 4-3 in a close contest that saw
Callie McDonald clinch a Marauders victory in the final match of the day.
"It was their first match, so they were still getting their bearings to start. They settled down in singles competition and showed great determination," UMary head coach
Vida Saliendra said.
The Marauders lost two out of three doubles matches.
Heidi Jacobson and
Callie McDonald won number three double with a 6-4 win.
Chloe Chong and
Ilona Freitag lost number one doubles 6-2.
Doaa Farouk Mohamed and
Emily Needham fell short in number two doubles 6-4.
Chong was victorious in number one singles, taking down Rachel Kelly 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.
Freitag fell in number two singles to Beth Murman 0-6, 1-6.
Mohamed won a tough battle in number three singles over Rina Niehoff 6-4, 7-5.
Needham lost a close contest in number four singles to Sara Anderson 6-1, 2-6, 3-6.
Jacobson won another close game over Brooke Holloway 7-6, 6-4 in number five singles.
McDonald closed things out for UMary in an intense match as she won 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 over Mikayla Hanson in number six singles. McDonald trailed 4-5 in the third set before rallying back to win the tiebreaker 7-2.
"The match boiled down to Callie, but she played with intensity and confidence. I'm very pleased with how she handled the pressure," said Saliendra.
