UMary drop games to UNK and FHSU in day two of the Washburn Invite

TOPEKA, KS – The University of Mary softball team (0-11) was defeated in their games against the University of Nebraska at Kearney (4-8) and Fort Hays State University (6-10). UMary was shut out 6-0 against UNK. The Marauders attempted to rally against FHSU but fell short, losing 10-7.

GAME 1 University of Nebraska at Kearney 6 University of Mary 0
UNK grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and never relinquished the lead. The Loopers then added three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth, giving UNK a 6-0 win. The Marauders had five hits total, while the Loopers had nine. Walks were an issue for UMary as seven UNK players drew a base on balls.

GAME 2 Fort Hays State University 10 University of Mary 7
FHSU exploded for five runs in the top of the third inning. UMary responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the third. Sariah Perez hit a double to right field which brought home Erin Murphy and Kaylee Kannegiesser. Erin Murphy would cut the Tigers lead to 5-3 after she hit a single to center, scoring Eryn De Jonge.

FHSU attempted to take control in the top of the fifth inning by scoring four runs, giving the Tigers a 9-3 lead. UMary wouldn't go out quietly, scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Hale Berube hit a grand slam to left field which scored Rachael Laetsch, Devyn Ritz and Perez.

The Tigers added on an insurance run in the sixth inning and extended their lead to three runs. The Marauders were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom but failed to capitalize as the Tiger would win 10-7.

STAT OF THE GAME
Haley Berube went 3-for-4 with one home run while driving in four runs. Berube hit the first grand slam of the season for the Marauders.

The Marauders travel to Winter Haven, FL, competing in ten games in six days. UMary's first game is against the University of Charleston on Thursday, March 3, at 11:15 am.
