Marauders level Tetons 12-2 in final home game of 2022

MANDAN, ND – Evenly distributing four goals in all three periods, the #1 University of Mary hockey team punished Williston State College 12-2 in the final home game of the 2022 calendar year for the Marauders. A trio of Marauders posted two goals each and nine UMary skaters total scored in the contest.

The 12 goals are a season-high for the Marauders after reaching eight twice.

UMary, the two-time defending ACHA Men's Division 2 national champions, improves to 19-3-1 overall with the Marauders second win of the season over the Tetons. Williston State is 4-8-0.

The Marauders got off to a blazing hot start when Isaiah Thomas scored on the first shot of the night just 31 seconds into the contest with a laser shot from inside the right circle.

In a mirror image from the left side, Johnny Witzke doubled the Marauders advantage to 2-0 when he broke down the left boards and fired a shot from below the left dot at the 6:38 mark.

The onslaught continued with Jack Dapron scoring from slot off a tremendous feed from Jaren Hugelen that left the native of St. Louis, MO, alone with Tetons netminder Freddy Peters.

Seth Cushing closed out the opening period with his first goal of the night at 15:43 to send UMary into the first intermission leading 4-0.
The Tetons closed the gap to three goals just over three minutes into the second period on a long shot into the upper left corner of the net by Cody Barnes.

Any hopes of a Tetons rally were quickly extinguished by three UMary goals in the span of 2:22. After Cushing scored on the power play at 9:14, Alex Flicek tallied at 11:19. Seventeen seconds later Thomas, who had a goal and two assists in the Marauders Saturday 3-2 win over Minot State University, scored his second goal of the game. Andrew Huber fired home the fourth goal of the second period with 54 seconds remaining to send UMary into the second intermission with a commanding 8-1 lead.

Goals by Dapron – his second – and Liam Massie pushed UMary's lead to 10-2 with just over three minutes to play in the game.

Instead of a quiet ending, the Tetons and the Marauders combined for three goals in the final three minutes of play. After Williston State scored on the power play at 18:18, Hugelen tallied with 42 seconds left in the game and Garrett Freeman jammed home the puck with 0.9 seconds showing on the clock.

Cushing led all players with two goals and an assist. With a goal and two assists, Freeman and Huber both had three-point nights also. Thomas and Dapron had two goals each. Hugelen, Flicek and Massie all had a goal and an assist. Teddy Lillico finished with two assists.

The Marauders finished the game with a 52-23 edge in shots that was reflected in the scoring.

UMary closes wraps up their December schedule with a trip north to take on Dakota College at Bottineau on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9-10. Friday's contest is 7 pm with Saturday's game slated for 2 pm.
