Marauders run of three home games in five days starts Tuesday against DSU before weekend visits from SCSU, UMD

THIS WEEK
A four-game home stand continues this week with a trio of games for the University of Mary men's basketball team at the McDowell Activity Center. The Marauders first host Dickinson State University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, December 6, at 5:30 pm… UMary then returns to Northern Sun play with their first weekend doubleheader of the season. The Marauders open the weekend against St. Cloud State University at 7:30 pm on Friday, Dec. 9. The home stand ends with a visit from #22 University of Minnesota Duluth at 5:30 pm Saturday, December 10.
 
LAST WEEK
The Marauders had their 4-game win streak snapped with a 79-60 loss at Northern State. Kam Warrens led the Marauders with 14 points and Zyon Smith added 13…. UMary had four players in double figures scoring at home against MSU Moorhead in an 88-55 loss. Warrens had 12 to lead UMary. Deven Franks added 11 points and Smith and Treyton Mattern each had 10.
 
RECORDS
The Marauders enter the week 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Northern Sun… Dickinson State is 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the North Star Athletic Association… St. Cloud State is 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC… Minnesota Duluth is 7-2 overall and 3-0- in he NSIC.
 
HISTORY LESSON – DICKINSON STATE
Since the Marauders moved from the NAIA to NCAA Division II in the 2006-07 season, UMary and Dickinson State have played just twice with both games in Bismarck. DSU won 81-75 on November 17, 2014… UMary won the next meeting 76-67 on Dec. 18, 2019, as Jaylan White scored 28 points.   
 
HISTORY LESSON - MARAUDERS v. HUSKIES
UMary is 12-19 all-time against St. Cloud State… The Marauders are 9-6 at home, 3-11 at SCSU and 0-2 on neutral ground… UMary's first NCAA win came at SCSU 86-77 on 11.18.06… UMary's first signature NCAA win was a 77-48 home victory over #8 SCSU on 12.16.07… The Marauders and he Huskies split a pair of games last season at the MAC… LAST MEETING UMary rolled past SCSU 90-77 at he MAC on Feb, 12, 2022. Kai Huntsberry led five Marauders in double digit scoring with 20 points. Davids Atelbauers hit five treys for 15 points. Lucas Mayer added 12 points and 14 rebounds.
 
HISTORY LESSON - MARAUDERS v. BULLDOGS
UMary trails Minnesota Duluth 11-17 in the all-time series… The Marauders first victory over the Bulldogs was an 80-77 overtime win on 1.16.09… The Marauders and the Bulldogs have split their series in each of the last two seasons (2020-21, 2021-22)… UMD won both games in 2017-18 and 2019-20 and UMary claimed the sweep in 2018-19 in a pair of memorable games. UMary defeated UMD 73-70 at home in overtime on Dec. 8, 2018, when Dennis Austin III hit a 3-pointer with .7 seconds left in the extra session. UMary rallied from an 8-point deficit with six minutes left in regulation. Jaylan White hit five treys and scored a career-high 29 points. Matthew Kreklow made all ten of his free throws and scored 18 points. Austin finished with ten points. Sean Burns had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Brandon Myer had 15 and 17… In another wild ballgame at UMD on Jan. 11, 2019, the Marauders closed the season series with a triple overtime 100-98 road victory on a Jaylan White basket with under two seconds remaining on the clock. White scored 12 of his 25 points in the overtime sessions. Connor Hellebust added 21 and Tom Kubank 18. Brandon Myer had 31 points and 11 rebounds for UMD… Davids Atelbauers drained a game-winning three-pointer with 23 seconds left in the contest as the University of Mary overcame a double-digit second half deficit to knock off the nation's 6th-ranked and Northern Sun North Division champion University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 75-71 on February 11, 2022. The Marauders scored the final eight points in the game in the final minute of play, with Atelbauers scoring the last five. The 6th ranked Bulldogs are the highest-ranked NCAA team the Marauders have beaten at the McDowell Activity Center. The previous mark was a 77-48 win over #8 St. Cloud State University on December 16, 2007. Kai Huntsberry had 19 points, Atelbauers 13, Gertautas Urbonavicius 11 and Kam Warrens 10… LAST MEETING Kai Huntsberry tied a Marauders NCAA era scoring mark with 42 points while hitting an NSIC tournament record seven treys in an 84-73 loss to the Bulldogs in the NSIC tournament quarterfinals. Huntsberry also had nine rebounds. Davids Atelbauers added 16 points. Austin Andrews had 19 points and 15 rebounds for UMD.
 
ALL IN
The Marauders are getting production throughout their lineup this season. At least eight Marauders have found the scoresheet in every game. All 14 Marauders who played in the season-opening 91-60 win over the visiting Saints produced points for UMary. 12 Marauders scored in the Trevecca Nazarene win and nine found the basket in the PR-Bayamon victory.
 
BALANCE
The Marauders feature seven players scoring between 12.3 ppg and 4.3 ppg, with five players averaging at least 8.0 ppg. Zyon Smith leads the way at 12.3 ppg followed by Kam Warrens at 10.8. Treyton Mattern averages 8.8ppg with Gertautas Urbonavicius at 8.3 and Jeremiah Jones at 8.0.  
 
BOARD GAMES
The Marauders have outrebounded their opponents in four of six games this season, including three times by double digits (+12 against Minot State, +14 against Trevecca Nazarene and +24 against PR-Bayamon). UMary is 55th in the nation in rebounds/game (39.33) and 78th in rebounding margin (+4.2).
 
DEFENSE
The Marauders have held four teams under 70 points this season. Opponents are scoring just 68.8 ppg against UMary this season. UMary is also holding teams to 40.7% shooting this season.  
 
HELPING HAND
The Marauders are averaging 17 assists per game, the 20th best total in the country.   
 
FOR THREE!
The Marauders are knocking down 36.6% of their 3-point attempts this season while the opposition is converting 34.9%.  
 
TAKING TURNS
Four different Marauders have led UMary in scoring this season: Kam Warrens (3x), Treyton Mattern, Zylon Smith and Lucas Mayer.
 
DOUBLING DOWN
Just five games into his collegiate career, freshman Jeremiah Jones has two double doubles. He had 15 points and 16 rebounds against Minot State. In the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Tournament championship game Jones dropped 11 points and ten rebounds. The guard from South Holland, IL, has also been a tremendous distributor with eight assists against Presentation and seven against PR-Bayamon. For the season he is averaging 8.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 43% from the floor and 84.6% at the line.
 
CENTURY STANDOUTS
The Marauders start a pair of Bismarck Century High School graduates in forward Lucas Mayer and Treyton Mattern. Both are second generation Marauders as their fathers both played for UMary. Additionally Mattern's mother (Gerene Saylor Mattern) is a member of the Marauders Hall of Fame for her exploits on the track. And Mattern's father, Darren, coached both Mayer and Mattern at Century HS.
 
DEBUTS
Seven Marauders made their UMary debuts in the season opener against Presentation. Zyon Smith (Highland CC) and Reme Torbert (Westminster College) both transferred to UMary before the start of the season. After redshirting last season for UMary, Gunner Swanson came off the bench for the Marauders. Freshmen Marquel Saleek, Jeremiah Jones, Xavier Lewis and Ty Rogers made their collegiate debuts.
 
RETURNING
The Marauders have six players back who saw considerable action last season, including four from the starting rotation.
  • Sr. F Gertautas Urbonavicius started all 27 games and was second on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg… averaged 4.8 rebounds/game… shot 47%from the floor and 41% on treys.
  • Sr. F Kam Warrens started 26 of 27 games… averaged 8.7 points/game and team-high 6.1 rebounds/game
  • Sr. F Lucas Mayer started last 12 games of the season after returning from injury… averaged 6.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game… shot team-leading 68.8% from the floor
  • Jr. G Treyton Mattern started 14 of the 18 games he played… averaged 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds/game… 3rd on team with 1.7 assists/game.
  • Sr. F Veljko Radakovic was a key reserve for the Marauders on the front line, playing in 19 games. He averaged 2.5 ppg.
  • Jr. G Deven Franks saw significant minutes in the back court last season, playing in 18 games and starting three games… Averaged 2.4 ppg.
  • Soph. F Liam Dougherty was limited to six games as a freshman.
  • Fr. G Gunner Swanson redshirted last season at UMary
 
NEW
Transfers Reme Torbert and Zyon Smith lead a group of eight new players for the Marauders, six of whom are freshmen… Smith averaged 14.2 ppg and shot over 43% from the field for Highland Community College last season to earn 2nd team Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference honors… Torbert averaged 10.2 ppg over the last two seasons as a starter at guard for Westminster College.
 
Freshmen for 2022-23 includes guards Colton Hall, Jeremiah Jones and Marquel Saleek and forwards Xavier Lewis, Payton Mogire and Ty Rogers.
 
YEAR TWO
Head coach Jack Nelson returns for his season with the Marauders after leading UMary to their best conference record since 2017. Nelson directed the Marauders to their first Northern Sun tournament road victory with an 82-70 win at Winona State to send UMary to the quarterfinals and a trip to the Sanford Pentagon. During the regular season the Marauders defeated #6 University of Minnesota Duluth 75-71, the highest ranked NCAA team UMary has beaten at home. Nelson recruited and coached Kai Huntsberry, the 2021-22 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and a 1st team all-conference selection who broke the NSIC tournament record for 3s in a game with eight.
