BOTTINEAU, ND – Generating a season-high number of shots in the final game of the 2022 calendar year for the University of Mary, the Marauders looked to bury Dakota College at Bottineau under an offensive avalanche. Instead it the was the Lumberjacks that cut down the #1 ranked Marauders 5-3 as DCB netminder Mason Matthew withstood a constant barrage from the UMary skaters.
One night after firing 44 shots on the Lumberjacks in a 3-2 win, the Marauders launched 68 shots in the game with Matthew turning aside 65. UMary generated at least 22 shots in each of the three periods.
The Marauders needed just 54 seconds to take a quick lead. Picking up a loose puck inside the right circle,
Tanner Eskro skated into the slot and ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net for a 1-0 UMary advantage. It was the only goal of the opening period for either team.
The Lumberjacks tallied the first two goals of the second period to grab their first lead of the weekend.
Johnny Witzke found the equalizer with 2:12 on the clock to send the two teams into the second intermission deadlocked 2-2.
Dakota College regained the lead less than four minutes into the third period on a Ryan Patterson goal. A Leighton Holstein goal at 10:54 put the Marauders in a two goal deficit at 4-2.
Just 29 seconds after the Lumberjacks fourth goal,
Andrew Huber struck for UMary to give the Marauders hope.
With time running low the Marauders hopes kept dwindling as Matthew continued to thwart UMary's efforts to score. The Lumberjacks finally sealed the win with an empty net goal by Fabian Vik with 2:54 remaining in the game. It was the second time Vik found the net in the game as he also scored the first Dakota College goal.
Kyle Hayden was strong in net for the Marauders as the reigning ACHA Player of the Year turned away 28 shots in the game.
Both teams struggled on the power play. UMary was 0-for-5 while DCB finished 1-for-7.
The Marauders, the 2-time defending American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2 national champions, finish the 2022 portion of their season with a record of 20-4-1. The Lumberjacks, who earned a weekend split after UMary won Friday's opener 3-2, are 4-11-0-2.
