ST. CLOUD, MN – The University of Mary Volleyball team finished their 2022 season today against #8 St. Cloud State University. A day after taking a set from the #5 team in the nation in the University of Minnesota Duluth, the Marauders would fall to the #8 Huskies in three sets (25-11, 25-16, 25-17).
UMary would take advantage of early mistakes to lead SCSU 7-6. The Huskies quickly recovered and fired back with an 11-0 run on their way to taking the first set convincingly 25-11.
The Marauders were back in a tighter affair with the Huskies in set two, keeping the set close with a balanced attack and good play at the net. However, the Huskies would still take the second set 25-16 thanks to a trio of runs that were led by a plethora of attackers, including NSIC Outstanding Senior of the Year Linsey Rachel, who became the Huskies all-time leader in kills in this matchup with 1,568.
UMary started off the third set solid with nice scores from their leading attackers, knotting the set score at 6-6. Once again, however, the reigning NSIC conference champions rattled off eight straight points before weathering a late Marauders comeback attempt to take the set 25-17, and the victory 3-0.
SCSU outhit UMary 0.377 to 0.140 and gained 54 kills to the Marauders 22. The Huskies were led by Kenzie Foley with 13 kills, and Linsey Rachel and Phebie Rossi both finished with 10.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Ally Gruber was the Marauders leading attacker for the second straight night with six kills while swinging 0.208. Gruber also grabbed six digs.
- Reyna Isenbart and Maddie Cooper both were efficient in the Marauders attack with five kills each. Isenbart also had five blocks and Cooper got a hand on one.
- Nehkyah Ellis finished with three kills, a team-high 10 digs, and served a pair of aces.
SEASON END LEADERS
- Nehkyah Ellis finished as the Marauders leader in kills for the second straight season with 238, just one kill shy of her personal best in 2021. Ellis was a versatile leader on the court in 2022, also leading with 27 service aces and she was second in digs with 288.
- Kaia Sueker was a defensive standout for the Marauders all season. She smashed her personal best marks in digs with 451 while averaging 4.70 per set. Sueker's 451 digs were the most in a season since 2015 when Alex Brown collected 487.
- Maddie Cooper finished as the leader in total blocks for the Marauders with 67, which was another team-best mark in seven years since Elizabeth Garcia blocked 72 balls in 2015. Cooper's defensive prowess was also complemented by a solid attack as she finished second on the team with 178 kills and a team-high 0.232 hitting percentage.
- Reyna Isenbart proved to be a great newcomer for the Marauders after coming from Otero Junior College in La Junta, CO. Isenbart finished third on the team with 158 kills and second with 59 blocks.
- Maddy Freed entered 2022 as the lone freshman for the Marauders and ended the season as the assists leader with 541.
- McKenna Kirkpatrick was another newcomer who was very effective at the net with 51 blocks as well as the service line with 26 ace serves.
GROWTH
The Marauders have earned five wins in the Northern Sun this season. It is the most conference wins for UMary since posting eight in 2015.
YOUTH IN REVOLT
The University of Mary volleyball team graduates nobody from this year's squad. The Marauders could potentially return the entire team that showed statistical improvements and finished with their most conference wins in seven years.
