MELBOURNE, FL – A late surge to close the first half carried the University of Mary men's basketball team to their third straight win to open the season. Opening the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Tournament against Trevecca Nazarene University, the Marauders downed the Trojans 72-56.
The Marauders (3-0 overall / 1-0 Northern Sun) wrap up their visit to the Sunshine State on Saturday, November 26, against Puerto Rico-Bayamon. Game time is slated for 4 pm EST/3 pm CST.
Knotted at 22-22 midway through the first half,
Jeremiah Jones drained a three to kick off a 15-4 run. A
Gertautas Urbonavicius scoring flurry over the final 91 seconds sent UMary into intermission leading 40-26 as the senior forward followed a layup with back-to-back treys.
Zylon Smith led the Marauders with 15 points, making 7-of-11 shots in the game. Right beyond was Urbonavicius with 14 points and seven rebounds. He was perfect on treys (2-for-2) and was 5-for-6 overall.
Overall 12 Marauders scored in the game.
Kam Warrens added seven points to his nine rebounds and four steals. Jones also added seven points and four assists.
Gus Davenport led the Trojans with 11 points.
The Marauders dominated boards 46-32 and outscored the Trojans 14-7 in second half points. UMary also had a huge 42-16 scoring edge in the paint.
