BISMARCK, ND – A first half scoring outburst by
Treyton Mattern ignited the University of Mary men's basketball team to a 91-60 win over visiting Presentation College in the Marauders belated season opener.
Mattern dropped a career-high 20 points on the Saints to lead the Marauders in scoring. The Bismarck, ND, native hit on all but one of his nine shots in the game, including a 3-for-4 effort behind the arc. He also added three rebounds and two assists in just 17 minutes of play. Mattern's previous career high was 12 points against St. Cloud State University his 1
st collegiate season on January 8, 2021.
After last weekend's planned opening two-game set for UMary in the Central Region Challenge scheduled to be played at home in the McDowell Activity Center were wiped out by a blizzard, the Marauders season opener was recalibrated with the Saints the new foe. Presentation, with seven regular season games and an exhibition already under its belt, provided strong opposition early and held a 13-12 advantage with just under 12 minutes remaining in the opening half.
Playing his first collegiate game,
Gunner Swanson drained a triple to give UMary a 16-15 lead UMary never relinquished. Already with a trey in the game, Mattern went on an offensive rampage. He scored 13 of the Marauders next 15 points as UMary increased its lead to 30-20. While the Saints would close within six points, the Marauders reasserted themselves and entered intermission with a 46-29 advantage.
Swanson was the only other UMary player in double figures. The redshirt freshman from Bismarck, ND, scored 12 points as he hit 4-of-5 shots from behind the arc.
All 14 of the Marauders who played in the game scored for UMary.
Gertautas Urbonavicius chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
Zyon Smith added seven points in his Marauders debut. Freshman
Jeremiah Jones came off the bench to distribute a team-leading eight assists and make four steals while scoring seven points. Fellow freshman
Ty Rogers snared a team-high six rebounds.
DJ Bonds led Presentation with 16 points. Isaiah Cabrera added 10.
The Marauders shot 52% from the floor, including an 11-for-20 effort behind the arc. UMary also was 140of-18 at the line. The Saints made just 32% of their shots, hitting 4-of-20 on 3s.
UMary next jumps into Northern Sun play when the Marauders host Highway 83 rival Minot State University on Tuesday, November 22. Game time is 6 pm at the MAC.
