DULUTH, MN – Dave Small Jr. ran for a University of Mary touchdown for a sixth straight game but the visiting Marauders were unable to match the scoring output generated by the University of Minnesota Duluth in a 49-14 loss to the Bulldogs.
Small crashed into the endzone from 1 yard out with 43 seconds left before intermission, pulling the Marauders within 21-7. The 7-play scoring drive of 68 yards totaled 3:00 and was Small's 6
th touchdown of the 2022 season and the 12
th of his career.
The senior from Lauderhill, FL, headlined the Marauders attack on the day, tying his season-high with 87 yards rushing on 14 carries. Small moved into 10
th place all-time on the UMary career rushing leaders chart with 1,175 yards partway through his second season with the Marauders. He moved past three Marauders on the all-time UMary career rushing list on Saturday; Josh Murray (1,095), Bayland Rippenkroger (1,106) and James Barrrett (1,133). Next on the UMary career rushing list is Dariouse Gravely (1,248) and Eric Chinnn (1,450).
UMary hoped to turn its scoring drive into momentum for the second half but Minnesota Duluth took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards for a touchdown to increase the Bulldogs lead to 28-7.
The Marauders followed with a strong offensive push, driving to the Bulldogs 13 yard line before the Bulldogs intercepted a pass in the end zone to end UMary's only possession of the third quarter.
Luke Bodine scored the Marauders only other touchdown of the game at 11:42 of the 4
th quarter when he hauled in a 22 yard scoring strike from
Jesse Forknell. The Bulldogs then scored on their next possession to seal the game.
Bodine, who has caught touchdown passes in three straight games, finished with two catches for 30 yards. All-American
Danny Kittner lead the Marauders passing attack with four catches for 58 yards.
Forknell, who entered the game late in the first half, finished 10-of-14 passing for 120 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions.
Devyn Charles had a big game on defense for the Marauders. The senior linebacker led all players with 3.5 tackles for loss and 14 total tackles (11 solo). Included in the mix was one of the Marauders three sacks on the day.
Charles had the most tackles for loss by a UMary player since Paul Guptill also had 3.5 against Upper Iowa on Oct. 13, 2019. The 14 tackles were the most by a Marauder since Jared Zittleman had 18 against MSU Moorhead on September 22, 2018.
Adam Brown added 2.0 tackles for loss, had a sack and forced a fumble.
William Federson also added a sack for UMary.
Kyle Walljasper led the Bulldogs with 125 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Garrett Olson threw for 250 yards. Drew Hennessy registered three of UMD's seven sacks.
UMD (4-2 NSIC/2-0 NSIC North) finished the day with 568 yards and 25 first downs to 207 and 15 for UMary (1-5/1-1).
The Marauders return home to open a 2-game home stand against #17 University of Sioux Falls on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is set for 2 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
