RALEIGH, NC – Goals split evenly between the first and second periods, sensational specialty teams play and another perfect performance in net by reigning national player of the year
Kyle Hayden was more than enough for the University of Mary hockey team to extend their win streak to 28 games with a 4-0 road victory over North Carolina State University.
Making their first trip to Raleigh, NC, the 2-time defending American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2 champion Marauders took on the Icepack for the first time since a 5-1 UMary win in the final game of pool play at the 2021 national tournament.
After a quiet start to the contest, the Marauders offense began to rev up midway through the opening period. A long pass off the far boards from
Derek Dropik to
Caleb Petrie started a breakaway for the Marauders. Carrying the puck to the end line, Petrie dropped the puck back to a trailing
Isaiah Thomas sailing down the slot. With perfect timing, Thomas one-timed his shot into the right side of the net at 11:53 for the only goal UMary would need.
Less than three minutes later, the Marauders doubled their lead. Holding the puck behind the net,
Seth Cushing found
Liam Massie cutting to the net. Cushing's pass though several defenders found its way to Massie's stick and his quick delivery pushed the Marauders lead to 2-0 after the first period.
The Marauders took advantage of a major miscue by the Icepack in the second period to seal the win. Awarded a five minute power play after an NCSU player was given a major penalty, UMary tallied twice.
Jaren Hugelen scored first at 14:31 off a feed from
Johnny Witzke and
Garrett Freeman. Exactly two minutes later, Cushing also scored on the same power play opportunity off assists from Thomas and Petrie.
Neither team scored in the third period.
The Marauders finished the night 2-for-2 on the power play and killed off five power play opportunities for the Icepack. NCSU was whistled for three penalties covering seven minutes while UMary committed eight penalties for 32 minutes.
Hayden stopped all 18 shots he faced in the game. It was Hayden's fourth straight shutout in his fifth start of the season. After allowing one goal in the season opener, Hayden has turned aside every shot he has faced in his last four outings.
Eric Daniel had 28 saves for NCSU.
The Marauders now move on to their next venue during this 3-game east coast road trip, heading to Lynchburg, VA, for a pair of games at Liberty University on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15. Game time between two of the preeminent programs in ACHA M2 is set for 3:30 pm CST both days. The Marauders defeated the Flames 4-0 on Oct. 2 in a neutral site game at the University of Minnesota Showcase.
