Marauders shine bright in the classroom, posting 3.36 GPA for 2020-21

BISMARCK, ND – University of Mary scholar-athletes found success in the classroom once again this year despite the chaos caused by a pandemic. With student-athletes forced to deal with constant uncertainty in all aspects of life, from changes in how classes may be delivered to adjustments in practice and competition schedules, the Marauders athletic department achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.36 for the 2020-21 academic year. The Marauders generated a 3.40 GPA for the 2020 Fall semester and a 3.32 GPA for Spring 2021.
 
"This past year our scholar-athletes obtained athletic and academic success during some very difficult times of covid-19 restrictions and limitations," said Marauders Director of Athletics Dale Lennon. "Considering all those challenges, it is even more impressive to recognize that all our athletic teams had a combined 3.36 GPA for the year. Needless to say, I am extremely proud of our scholar-athletes, coaches, and administration for staying focused on the pursuit of academic excellence. The University of Mary community can be very proud of our scholar-athletes."
 
Seventeen of the Marauders 18 NCAA athletic programs registered team grade point averages of 3.00 or better for the year.
 
The Marauders female student-athletes collectively owned a 3.55 grade point average for the year. The UMary male student-athletes combined to register a 3.22 GPA.
 
The UMary women's basketball team posted the highest team GPA this year at 3.666 to just edge out soccer at 3.663. Close behind was women's track & field and cross country (3.612), swimming & diving (3.606), volleyball (3.56) and men's basketball (3.52).
 
The Marauders men's golf team registered a team GPA of 3.49 for 2020-21, followed by baseball (3.43), softball (3.40), tennis (3.35), men's track & field and cross country (3.31), wrestling (3.11), football (3.03) and women's golf (2.90).
 
Fifty-two Marauders posted a perfect 4.00 grade point average for the spring after 40 were perfect in the fall.
 
Out of nearly 400 total UMary student-athletes, 231 Marauders own a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better for their academic career, with 172 holding a 3.5 or better GPA and 99 at 3.75 or better, including six with a 4.0 GPA.
