SIOUX FALLS, SD – Another impressive season for the University of Mary tennis team came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Northern Sun conference tournament when the Marauders fell 4-1 to Southwest Minnesota State University.
"We had a good season and I am proud of everyone's performance. I look forward to another good season next school year," UMary Head Coach Vida Saliendra said.
The Marauders (8-4 overall / 8-3 NSIC), who tied for third place overall in the NSIC and was the fourth seed in the tournament, won two out of the three doubles matches against the Mustangs (9-7/ 8-3). Tasha Dembo and Yusra Hegy won 6-4 in number one doubles. Heidi Jacobson and Kali Askvig lost 6-2 in number two doubles but Samantha Purpura and Jamie Stoppler were victorious in number three doubles 6-4 to give the Marauders their only team point.
Dembo fell in her number singles match against Maegan Flight 6-3, 6-1.
Hegy lost in number two singles 6-2, 6-3 to Courtenay Leonard.
Heidi Jacobson was defeated by Cora Delich 6-0, 6-0 in number five singles.
Samantha Purpura lost in number six singles to Silvia Poulakidas 6-4, 6-2.
The other two matches remained unfinished due to SMSU already grabbing four points to secure the win. In number three singles Jamie Stoppler's match against Maja Louisa Harck went unfinished with Stoppler leading the match 3-6, 6-2, 3-2.
Kali Askvig's match against Kjerstin Hall in number four singles also did not finish. Hall won the first set 7-5 with Askvig leading the second set 2-1 when the match ended.
