GREAT FALLS, MT – A fortuitous carom off the side boards provided the winning goal for #1 University of Mary in a 4-3 road victory over #18 University of Providence in the first of two games between the Marauders and the Argos. It is also UMary's final weekend of the regular season.
In a 3-3 game with time running down,
Kyler Moore won a faceoff in the neutral zone just outside the blue line, drawing the puck back to
Drew Lenertz near center ice. The Marauders defenseman fired the puck down the right boards with Argos goalkeeper Connor Olson leaving his net in anticipation of playing the puck to his teammates. The puck never reached Connor in the corner. Instead the puck ricocheted off the sideboard at a 90 degree angle and settled untouched in the Argos net for a stunning game-winning goal with 4:26 left in the game.
The Argos were gifted a golden opportunity to pull even when the Marauders were cited twice for penalties with 3:16 remaining on the clock, but Providence was unable to convert on the 5-on-3. Another penalty on the Marauders with 1:35 remaining guaranteed the Argos would have a power play until the end of regulation but the UMary goaltender
Conan Hayton and the team's penalty kill unity stood strong.
Seth Cushing gave the Marauders a 2-0 lead when UMary's leading scorer found the net twice in the opening period. The Argos scored the next two goals, including the equalizer on a power play 35 seconds into the third period.
Zach Garrett temporarily regained the lead for the Marauders at 3-2 at the 5:20 mark on an unassisted goal. Providence needed just 63 seconds to once again pull the game into a tie on a Kyler Mack goal.
Garrett finished the game with a goal and an assist. Moore added two assists. Hayton finished with 28 saves.
The Marauders penalty kill unit had a huge night, holding the Argos to one goal on nine attempts. UMary was 0-for-2 skating with a man advantage.
The Marauders improve to 33-3-6-1 (W-L-T-OTL) on the season.
UMary and Providence close the weekend series with a 4 pm CDT/3 pm MT start on Saturday, March 27.
