Garrett leads #1 Marauders to 4-2 win over #18 Argos

MANDAN, ND – Back to full strength after missing a pair of games due to injury, team captain Zach Garrett scored the game-winning goal and dished three assists to headline the top-ranked University of Mary hockey team's 4-2 win over visiting #18 University of Providence. Seth Cushing added a pair of goals for UMary in the Marauders final home game of the regular season.

The Marauders grabbed an early lead with a pair of first period goals. Riley Scanlon scored first for UMary. Left alone atop the crease, Scanlon buried a Garrett feed passed from behind the net 6:02 into the game.

Looking to just maintain their lead while killing off an Argos power play, UMary instead doubled its advantage to 2-0 with 5:14 left in the opening period. Picking up a loose puck in the Marauders defensive zone, Garrett bounced a pass off the left boards that caromed onto the stick of Cushing as he barreled down the ice. Flying past the last Argos skater between him and the goal, Cushing cut inside and beat the Providence goalkeeper for his team-leading 31st goal of the year.

Despite holding a 34-12 edge in shots after two periods, the Marauders couldn't pull away from the Argos, and slowly Providence found itself back in the game. After Reed Link scored the only goal of the second period, Ty Alger knotted the contest 2-2 only 26 seconds into the third period when he scored on an Argos power play.

Less than two minutes later, Garrett regained the lead for the Marauders. Following up on a rebound off a blast from the right point by Marshall Tschida, Garrett knocked home the puck at the 2:13 mark to push UMary back in front at 3-2. It was his 17th goal of the season.

Cushing capped the Marauders victory with an empty net goal with 69 seconds left in the game.

UMary finished the game with a 49-20 edge in shots. Kyle Hayden ended the night with 18 saves for the Marauders. Jacob Fry stopped 45 shots for Providence.

Both teams struggled to score on the power play. Providence was 1-for-6 while UMary was held without a goal in five opportunities with a man advantage. However UMary did have a shorthanded goal.

The Marauders improve to 32-3-6-1 (W-L-T-OTL) on the season.

This was the first of three straight games between the Marauders and the Argos. UMary closes out its 2020-21 regular season at Providence on Friday and Saturday, March 26-27. The next time the Marauders play at home will be during the ACHA Division 2 national hockey tournament held in Bismarck/Mandan on April 15-20.
