MANDAN, ND –
Kyle Hayden posted 34 saves and
Seth Cushing scored the lone goal for top-ranked University of Mary as the Marauders skated to a 1-1 ties against #4 Minot State University in the first meeting of the year between the two instate foes.
The Marauders, ranked first in American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 2 hockey, jumped up a level to face the Beavers, ranked fourth in ACHA Division 1. UMary remains in search of its first win against Minot State, twice skating to draws against the Beavers.
After a scoreless opening period, Cushing found the net at 8:41 of the second period, scoring his team-leading 30
th goal of the season off a feed from
Kyler Moore.
With the Marauders pressing for a second goal while on a power play, the Beavers were able to turn the tables as Blake Fornier scored shorthanded for the Beavers at 16:48 to pull Minot State even and send the two teams into the second intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
Both teams generated scoring opportunities in the third period and overtime. Minot State held a 13-12 edge in shots in the third and both sides fired three shots on goal in overtime. Each time Hayden and Beavers goalkeeper Riley Wallace held their ground.
Hayden remains undefeated on the season, owning 14 wins and five ties with one overtime loss.
For the game MSU edged UMary in shots 35-34.
The two teams are back in action on Saturday, March 13, when the Beavers host the Marauders at 7:30 pm.
