MANDAN, ND – Andy Huber found the net in each of the first two periods to lead the University of Mary hockey team to their tenth straight win. UMary scored the first five goals in the game and knocked off visiting Dakota College of Bottineau 6-1 to give the Marauders a win in all four meetings with the Lumberjacks this season.
The Marauders started fast with a pair of first period goals. Faced with a wide open net after maneuvering through the slot,
Alex Flicek knocked home UMary's opening tally at 11:59 off assists from
Kyler Moore and
Zach Garrett. It was the 17
th goal of the season for the Marauders career-leader in goals.
With time evaporating in the opening stanza, Huber doubled the Marauders lead in the closing seconds. With Dakota College looking to enter intermission down just one goal, Huber converted passes from Garrett and
Johnny Witzke with five seconds remaining on the clock to stun the Lumberjacks as UMAry entered the break leading 2-0.
The goals kept flowing for the Marauders in the second period.
Riley Scanlon, Huber and
Derek Dropik all scored for UMary to boost the home team's insurmountable lead to 5-0. For Dropik it was his first UMary goal.
The Lumberjacks finally penetrated the Marauders defense in the final seconds of the second, finding the net with six seconds remaining before the final intermission.
Seth Cushing scored his team-best 22
nd goal of the season in the third, the only scoring of the final period.
Conan Hayton stopped 26 shots to earn the win in net for the Marauders, improving his record to 11-1-0-0. The Marauders launched 61 shots at Lumberjacks goalie Matt Trulsen, who registered 55 saves.
Huber led the Marauders with two goals and now has 11 on the season. Flicek and Cushing both contributed a goal and an assist. Garrett, Moore and
Marshall Tschida all had a pair of assists in the game. Overall a dozen Marauders had at least one point in the game.
UMary improves to 21-1-2-1 on the season while DCB slips to 8-7.
The Marauders play their next six games on the road, starting with a pair of contests against the University of Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 6-7. This is the first year for the Golden Eagles program. UMary next plays at home Feb. 21 when the University of North Dakota's ACHA M2 program visits Mandan.
