AMES, IA – The top-ranked University of Mary hockey team rallied to earn a 1-1 draw on the road against 6
th ranked Iowa State University.
Kyler Moore scored the Marauders lone goal and
Kyle Hayden posted a career-high 42 saves as UMary rebounded from a loss the night before to the Cyclones that snapped the visitor's 16-game unbeaten streak.
Ranked first in both ACHA M2 polls released this season, the Marauders are 26-2-4-1 (W-L-T-OTL). UMary is 4-1-1-0 against Iowa State this year.
The Cyclones struck early, needing just 82 seconds to take the initial lead of the night on a goal by Mason McIntosh.
Less than four minutes later the Marauders pulled even on a goal by Moore off assists from
Alex Flicek and
Zach Garrett at 4:41.
The rest of the night belonged to the goaltenders. The pair of Hayden and Iowa State's Devin Naidow combined to make an impressive 79 saves in the game. Hayden made 14 saves in each of the first two periods before making another dozen in the third and two more in overtime.
While the Marauders held a slight 3-2 edge in shots in overtime, UMary also had to skate off a penalty. ISU finished the night 0-for-2 with the man advantage while UMary was unable to take advantage of three power play opportunities.
Following a scoreless overtime session, the Marauders won a shootout 2-1 behind goals by
Seth Cushing and
Johnny Witzke. The shootout result in not part of the official record as the game officially is recorded as a tie.
The Marauders have one more outing before the weekend concludes. UMary makes a stop in Jamestown, ND, on the way home to face the University of Jamestown M2 team on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 5 pm.
