AMES, IA – A program-record 16-game unbeaten streak came to a close tonight when the #1 University of Mary hockey team suffered a 4-1 road loss to #6 Iowa State University. The loss was also the first this season for the Marauders to a fellow American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 2 opponent.
Ranked first in both ACHA M2 polls released this season, the Marauders slip to 26-2-3-1 (W-L-T-OTL). This was the Marauders first loss to the Cyclones after winning the first four games against Iowa State.
The Cyclones scored the only two goals of the opening period, putting the Marauders back on their skates. Marco Escobar opened the scoring at 7:27 before Ryan Hempel found the back of the UMary net 2:13 before the end of the period.
Iowa State pushed its lead to 3-0 just 96 seconds into the second period.
Three minutes later at the 4:39 mark,
Jaren Hugelen scored off a
Johnny Witzke feed to cut the Marauders deficit to two goals at 3-1.
The Cyclones closed off the Marauders hopes and the scoring on a goal with 2:13 left in the contest.
This is the second time this season the Cyclones have held the Marauders to a single goal, the two lowest-scoring games for UMary this season. The previous time the Marauders claimed a 1-0 win.
The Marauders held a 39-33 edge in shots on a night in which only one penalty was called on each team.
UMary looks to get back into the win column when the Marauders and the Cyclones wrap up their 2-game weekend series at 4:30 pm on Saturday, February 27. The weekend concludes on the road against the University of Jamestown M2 team on Sunday, Feb. 28
