BOTTINEAU, ND – An explosive third period carried the #1 University of Mary hockey team to a 5-2 road win over #4 Dakota College of Bottineau. UMary scored four times in the final session to extend the Marauders unbeaten streak to 14 games.
Even at one goal apiece entering the third period, the Marauders took their second lead of the game when Tanner Esko gave UMary a 2-1 advantage at the 9:05 mark. Three minutes later the Lumberjacks pulled even at 2-2.
The rest of the night belonged to the Marauders. Continuing a recent hot streak,
Alex Flicek snapped the tie at 14:24 with his 22
nd goal of the season.
Seth Cushing doubled the Marauders advantage at 4-2 with just 89 seconds left in the game. Beating the defender to the outside and cutting right across the face of the goal, Cushing buried the puck for his 23
rd goal of the year to regain the team's goal-scoring lead from Flicek.
Kyler Moore finished off the Marauders outburst with an unassisted empty net goal with 40.5 seconds remaining.
Zach Garrett opened the scoring for the Marauders less than two minutes into the game. The onetime Lumberjack stole the puck from a Dakota College skater and buried a wrister from the left circle into the upper reaches of the net for the only goal in the first period.
Will Yates scored the lone goal of the second period to pull Dakota College even entering an exciting third period.
Derek Dropik posted two assists on the game for the Marauders, setting up the game-winning goal for Flicek and Cushing's that followed.
Braeden Zaste and
Cyril Nagurski posted the Marauders other assists.
UMary held a decisive 52-28 edge in shots, with much of the advantage built up following a 23-2 first period advantage.
The Marauders improve to 24-1-3-1 (W-L-T-OTL) this season. The Lumberjacks are 11-8, including five losses to UMary.
Next up for the Marauders are a pair of home games. UMary hosts the University of North Dakota ACHA M2 team at 12 noon on Sunday, February 21. The Marauders then play their final home game of the month when Williston State College visits on Feb. 24.
