Pair of goals in final 14 seconds earns #1 Marauders improbable 2-2 draw against Tetons

WILLISTON, ND – Held scoreless until the closing moments of regulation, the nation's top-ranked University of Mary hockey team stunned homestanding Williston State College with a pair of goals in the final 14 seconds of play to force overtime and earn an improbable 2-2 draw. The tie extended the Marauders unbeaten streak to 13 games.

With their national ranking and a 12-game winning streak on the line, the Marauders were unable to solve Tetons goaltender Tyler Jansen until a furious flurry to close out the game. Jansen stopped 57 straight shots until the Marauders attack overwhelmed the Williston State defense in the final minute.

Leading by a single goal, the Tetons appeared to clinch a win when Cameron Maycock scored with 70 seconds left in the game to double the Williston State lead to 2-0.

Refusing to give up and play out the string, the Marauders continued to buzz the Tetons net. UMary finally broke through when Alex Flicek jammed home the puck with only 14 seconds remaining in regulation, cutting the visitor's deficit in half. Flicek, UMary's all-time goal scoring leader, is on a tear. UMary's all-time goal leader has scored a goal in nine of the Marauders last ten games, finding the net a dozen times during this run. He has 21 on the year. Zach Garrett picked up the lone assist.

Seven more seconds is all it took for the Marauders to complete their implausible comeback. With the Tetons on their heels, Kyler Moore fought through traffic in front of the Williston State net and knocked home a miraculous game-tying goal with seven seconds left on the clock to force overtime. Seth Cushing posted the primary assist with Garrett also earning an assist, his second of the night.

Neither team managed to score in overtime as Kyle Hayden made five of his 34 saves in the extra session. Jansen turned away six Marauders scoring attempts.

The Marauders finished with a 65-36 edge in shots.

The Marauders, who haven't lost since November, improve to 23-1-3-1 (W-L-T-OTL) on the season.

Next up for UMary is a visit to Dakota College at Bottineau on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 7 pm.
