MANDAN, ND – An exciting week for the University of Mary hockey team started with the announcement the Marauders will elevate to American Collegiate Hockey Association in 2023-24 and continued with a successful Teddy Bear Toss and Game Jersey Auction. With the home team wearing commemorative Teddy Bear Toss jerseys commissioned for tonight's game, UMary fans tossed a cavalcade of stuffed animals onto the ice when
Zach Garrett opened the scoring late in the first period of a 7-2 Marauders win over visiting Williston State College.
All stuffed animals collected tonight and proceeds from the sale of the Marauders jerseys will be donated to Community Action's Backpacks for Kids program in hopes of brightening the holiday season for local children.
Seth Cushing posted a hat trick and an assist to lead the Marauders attack.
Alex Flicek added a pair of goals.
The Marauders were unable to solve Tetons netminder Austyn Melin for much of the first period as UMary launched 15 shots to one for Williston State. Garrett, the reigning ACHA Division 2 Player of the Year, got the Marauders offense jumpstarted when he found the net off a rebound at the 16:10 mark. Flicek doubled UMary's lead two minutes later to send the Marauders into intermission leading 2-0.
Williston State climbed within 2-1 on a Jackson Dodds goal at 13:59 of the second. Despite continuing to barrage the Tetons net and holding a 16-8 edge in shots, the Marauders couldn't score in the period and led just 2-1 coming out of the final intermission.
Everything came together for the Marauders in the third period as UMary exploded for five goals.
Seth Cushing doubled the Marauders advantage to 3-1 just 97 seconds into the final stanza. Nearly 10 minutes later,
Marshall Tschida delivered the Marauders fourth goal of the night. A miniscule five seconds later Cushing scored again for a 5-1 lead.
Following the second Tetons goal of the night, Flicek found the back of the net for his 13
th goal of the season at 13:35.
Cushing finished off his hat trick with 51 seconds remaining in the game.
Three other Marauders also posted multiple points.
Isaiah Thomas and
Johnny Witzke both had a trio of assists and
Riley Scanlon had two helpers.
Conan Hayton was again strong in net for UMary, stopping 17 of the 19 shots he faced from Williston State. Melin finished the night stopping 33 of the 37 shots he faced. Frederick Peters came into the game and turned away 13 of the 16 shots he faced. Overall the Marauders held a 53-19 edge in shots.
Next up for the Marauders is a road trip to the University of Jamestown on Friday, December 10. It is UMary's last game in December.
