MINOT, ND – In a matchup between two of the elite hockey programs in North Dakota, a trio of second period goals sunk the chances of visiting University of Mary to knock off Minot State University. Despite scoring a pair of third period goals, the Marauders rally fell short in a 5-2 loss to the Beavers.
The Marauders, the defending American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2 national champion and the top-ranked team in the country, slips to 18-3-1-2. The Beavers are ranked 2
nd in ACHA Division 1.
UMary hosts the rematch against Minot State on Saturday, Dec. 4. Face off is set for 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink.
Following a scoreless opening period, the Beavers struck for the opening goal just 3:02 into the second period. Taking advantage of a flurry of penalties on the Marauders, Carter Barley scored at 17:38 with the Beavers on a 2-man advantage. Barley struck for a second power play goal with nine seconds left in the middle stanza to push the Minot State lead to 3-0.
Still skating shorthanded to start the third period,
Zach Garrett created a turnover for the Marauders and delivered the puck to
Marshall Tschida. The UMary defender fired the puck across the ice to
Isaiah Thomas in the left circle and the Marauders first year player buried his shot to close the gap to two only 32 seconds into the final period.
After Minot State struck again at 5:04, the Marauders continued effort created another goal. Taking advantage of a Beavers penalty, Tschida scored a power play goal at 10:11 to again close within a pair of goals at 4-2. Thomas and
Jaren Hugelen claimed assists on the counter.
Just 65 seconds later the homestanding Beavers sealed their win with a final goal.
In a rugged game that featured 12 power plays, the Marauders were whistled for eight infractions totaling 45 minutes. The Beavers were called for seven penalties amounting to 22 minutes. UMary was 1-for-6 on the power play while MSU finished 2-for-6.
Tschida and Thomas both finished with a goal and an assist in the game.
The Marauders finished with a 23-22 edge in shots.
