JAMESTOWN, ND – Playing in their final game of 2021, the #1 University of Mary hockey team used a trio of goals in the second period to skate past homestanding University of Jamestown 5-2.
Five different Marauders scored in the game as defending American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 2 national champion UMary improved to 20-4-1-2 (W-L-OTL-T).
The Marauders opened the scoring midway through the first period. Taking control of the puck in the left circle,
Braeden Zaste slid a perfect backhand pass to an open
Isaiah Thomas flashing in front of the Jimmies net. Collecting the pass on the move, Thomas slowed enough to slide the puck under goaltender Samuel Potter for his 9
th goal of the season at the 12:02 mark.
The Jimmies knotted the game just 2:18 into the second period. Less than three minutes later the Marauders reclaimed their advantage. Chasing down a loose puck behind the Jimmies net,
Garrett Freeman bounced a pass in front of the crease to
Kyler Moore. Collecting the puck to the right of the cage, Moore quickly pivoted and knocked home his 11
th counter of the season to give the Marauders a 2-1 lead.
Continuing to pressure the Jimmies defense,
Alex Flicek knocked home a rebound into an open right side of the net at 12:25 to double the UMary advantage to 3-1. A long blast from
Andrew Heckaman atop the right circle with 76 seconds left in the period with UMary on the power play gave the Marauders a 4-1 lead entering the second intermission.
The Jimmies and the Marauders exchanged goals in the third period. After Jamestown tallied 61 seconds into the final frame, Freeman closed out the scoring with UMary's second power play goal of the game when he knocked home a rebound off an initial shot from a
Johnny Witzke shot at 13:03.
The Marauders scored on two of three power play opportunities while blanking the Jimmies on two attempts with a man advantage for the home team.
Holding just a 9-7 advantage in shots following the opening period, the Marauders blitzed the Jimmies net the last two stanzas and finished with a massive 43-18 edge in shots for the game.
Kyle Hayden had 16 saves for UMary while Potter had 38 stops.
Freeman, Heckaman and Moore all finished with a goal and an assist and ten Marauders finished with a point.
UMary next takes to the ice January 7 on the road at the University of Providence in Great Falls, MT.
