DICKINSON, ND – College Hockey Night in Dickinson delivered an exciting matchup as the #1 ranked University of Mary hockey team defeated the Dakota College of Bottineau Lumberjacks 5-2 at the West River Ice Center Saturday Night. UMary hockey extends its unbeaten streak to 14 straight games without a loss in the hometown of players
Andrew Heckaman and
Jaren Hugelen.
Top-ranked UMary is now 18-2-0-1 after the defeating Lumberjacks for the second time this season, who are right behind the Marauders in the West Region poll.
The Marauders struck first just 1:41 into the first period with a goal from
Marshall Tschida, receiving the assist from
Kyler Moore. The next Marauders score came with 6:36 remaining in the first period when
Isaiah Thomas skated past Lumberjack goalie Jordan Berschiminsky and netted a backhanded goal,
Seth Cushing and
Alex Flicek setting up the play for the assists.
With 1:31 left in the first, Bottineau harped on a 5 on 4 man-advantage with a powerplay goal courtesy of Zane MacDonald, assisted by Joben Smith and Eric Hildebrand.
UMary turned the tide killing a Bottineau powerplay early in the 2
nd period, but the Lumberjacks persisted offensively with the next score coming with 10:38 to go in the 2
nd. After Ryan Patterson rifled a close wrist shot off the crossbar, Leighton Holstein crashed the net for the rebounded goal to tie it up 2-2, Patterson and Ian Amsbaugh were credited with the assists.
After a scuffle forced 4 on 4 action, reigning ACHA M2 National Player of the Year
Zach Garrett flew up the right-wing and sent a laser to the top shelf of the net to retake the lead for the Marauders 3-2. Assisted by
Kyler Moore and
Garrett Freeman, Garrett's goal would end up being the game-winner.
The 3
rd period was all the Marauders as they added two more powerplay goals. The first came 1:43 into the final period from UMary's all-time leader in goals
Alex Flicek, finding the twine with the assists from
Isaiah Thomas and
Marshall Tschida. UMary struck one final time as
Garrett Freeman crashed the net on another powerplay goal assisted by
Johnny Witzke and Dickinson's own
Andrew Heckaman to make the final score 5-2 UMary over Dakota College of Bottineau.
The Marauders will hit the road once again tomorrow to complete the weekend series with Dakota College of Bottineau, this time as the away team at the Lumberdome with a 6 pm puck drop.
UMary will return home to Mandan this Wednesday to host the University of Jamestown M1 hockey team.
