MANDAN, ND – A dominant night in net by
Kyle Hayden and a third period offensive eruption by
Seth Cushing carried the University of Mary past visiting Dakota College of Bottineau 3-0 on Military Appreciation Night. Hayden posted 38 saves and Cushing had a goal and two assists as the Marauders extended their win streak to eight games.
The Marauders (13-2 overall) have now gone 11 straight periods without allowing a goal. Impressively, all three UMary goalkeepers have played during that scoreless streak.
Hayden and Matt Trulsen of the Lumberjacks (3-3) put on a goaltending clinic all night as the duo matched one another save for save. Both teams applied consistent pressure the opening two periods but neither team could find the back of the net.
With the midpoint of the third period fast approaching and neither team scoring, Cushing took decisive action for the Marauders and tilted the game towards the home team. Picking up a loose puck in his own defensive end, the speedy forward blazed a path down the ice and circled around the Lumberjacks net before stuffing the puck between Trulsen's skate and the right post, opening the scoring 8:14 into the final period.
Just over five minutes later Cushing created another scoring opportunity for the Marauders, centering a pass from behind the net to
Alex Flicek's stick on the right of the net. After Flicek's initial shot was stopped by Trulsen,
Marcus Kopp cleaned up the loose puck and stuffed it home under the goalkeeper's pads.
The Marauders sealed their win on an empty net goal by Flicek with 61 seconds left in the game off a helper from Cushing.
Flicek joined Cushing for a multi-point night with a goal and an assist.
UMary's power play capabilities once again impacted the outcome. The Marauders skated off four power play chances by the Lumberjacks and have held the opposition to just three power play goals all season. UMary was limited to one power play opportunity on the night.
After the Marauders held a 14-6 edge in shots in the first period, the next two periods tightened up considerably with DCB holding am 18-16 edge in the second and UMary having a 15-14 advantage in the third. Overall UMary held a 45-38 edge in shots for the game.
Trulsen finished a busy night facing 44 shots and turning aside 42.
UMary continues its home stand this weekend with a visit from the University of St. Thomas. The Marauders and Tommies first square off at 7 pm on Saturday, Nov. 13, before playing at 2 pm on Sunday, Nov. 14.
