AMES, IA –
Kyler Moore scored in the opening moments of overtime to give defending national champions University of Mary a 2-1 win at Iowa State University in a rematch from the 2021 American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2 title game last April.
Stunning the home team, Moore scored just 23 seconds into the extra frame, keeping the Marauders undefeated in season-openers as UMary starts its fourth year.
Marshall Tschida earned the assist on the game-winner.
On a free-wheeling night featuring a plethora of shots and only two penalties – both taken by the Cyclones – the Marauders opened the scoring on a
Braeden Zaste goal at 14:04 of the second period.
Johnny Witzke and
Zach Garrett provided the helpers on the first goal of the year.
The Cyclones found the equalizer at 11:54 of the third period when Peter Meyer slipped the puck past Marauders goalkeeper
Kyle Hayden.
An All-American last season and the most valuable player at the national championships, Hayden had a tremendous night in net for the Marauders. The third year player faced a game-high 42 shots and made 41 saves. The victory was Hayden's 39
th in net for UMary, setting a new Marauders career record for wins. He was previously tied with All-American Lance Knudson with 38.
ISU netminder Greg Moon was almost as good, making 38 saves on the night.
The Marauders and the Cyclones wrap up their weekend series at 5:15 pm on Saturday, Oct. 2.
