AMES. IA – Relying on a pair of All-Americans, defending national champion University of Mary earned a weekend sweep of Iowa State University in a rematch of the national title game.
Kyle Hayden had another big night in net and
Johnny Witzke scored the night's only goal in a 1-0 Marauders road win over the Cyclones.
The Marauders improve to 2-0 on the season after opening their schedule with a 2-1 overtime win on Friday.
Scoreless after the opening period, Witzke scored his first goal of the season on a power play goal at 5:46 of the second stanza.
Alex Flicek and
Jaren Hugelen earned assists.
The rest of the night belonged to Hayden. He posted 35 saves in the game, including nine in the final period.
Iowa State netminder also had another strong performance, stopping all but one of the 39 shots UMary took in the game.
One night after moving into the top spot for career wins at UMary, breaking a tie with fellow All-American Lance Knutson, Hayden claimed the top spot in career shutouts with 10, another mark he shared with Knutson.
The Marauders make one more stop on opening weekend, facing the University of St. Thomas on Sunday, Oct. 3, in Highland Park, MN. Face off is set for 11 am.
