Luke Little caught a pair of scoring passes and
Logan Nelson cracked 300 yards passing in the Marauders 34-14 loss to homestanding University of Sioux Falls. UMary entered the game with wins in their two previous road games.
The Marauders both opened and closed the scoring on a pair of touchdown passes from Nelson to Little. The Cougars scored everything in between.
Sioux Falls threatened to score on the opening possession of the game, driving to the UMary 5 yard line before
Tanner Vaughan stopped USF running back Thuro Reisdorfer after a gain of 1 on a 4
th down and 2 play.
After forcing the Cougars to punt on their second possession, the Marauders drove 81 yards in 13 plays to grab a 7-0 lead early in the 2
nd quarter when Nelson found Little in the back left corner of the end zone from 12 yards out.
USF immediately responded when Reisdorfer scored on a 1 yard run. However a missed point after kick attempt left the Marauders up 7-6.
The Cougars followed with touchdowns on their next two possessions and built a 20-7 advantage entering intermission.
The game took a drastic turn in the third quarter. On the opening drive, Nelson found Little behind the USF defense for a 40 yard gain to the USF 4 yard line. Three straight run attempts left the Marauders facing 4
th-and-goal at the USF 1. On one final effort to crack the goal line, Dave Small Jr. was hit in the backfield for a 2 yard loss. Taking over at their own 3 yard line, the Cougars proceeded to drive 97 yards for a touchdown and a 26-7 lead. Twice the Cougars converted on 3
rd downs and Reisdorfer posted a 30 yard run before eventually scoring from 1 yard out to cap an 18 play drive.
Following the final USF touchdown of the day early in the fourth quarter, the Marauders drove 75 yards for a final touchdown as Nelson found Little on a 6 yard scoring strike with 8:49 to play.
One of the nation's leaders in receptions, yardage and touchdown receptions, Little caught 12 passes for 152 yards and two scores. The senior, who now has 11 TDs on the season, cracked 100 yards receiving for the fifth time this season. This is the fourth time he has scored multiple TDs in a game this season.
Danny Kittner, the nation's leader in catches, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and all purpose yards entering the game, finished with 9 catches for 90 yards. This is the first time all season Kittner was held under 100 yards and without a touchdown. The junior wideout cracked 1,000 yards receiving in the game, a feat accomplished just five times in team history. Elby Pope was the last UMary player to reach that milestone in 2014.
Nelson had another big game. He completed 30-of-46 passes for 310 yards and two scores. USF sacked Nelson four times and intercepted one pass.
Small ran for 51 yards on 18 carries.
Defensively
Tylen Small posted 13 tackles.
Johnny Tillman added five solo stops and forced and recovered a fumble.
Reisdorfer led USF with 45 yards rushing and 2 TDs on 19 carries. Landon Freeman added another 112 yards and a score on the ground as the Cougars rushed for 311 yards. Adam Mullen p[assed for 206 yards and 2 TDs, finishing 16-of-21.
The Marauders generated 24 first downs and 369 yards of offense. USF had 26 first downs and 517 yards. Both teams committed one turnover.
