Garrett, Flicek headline Marauders weekend sweep of Gophers

MANDAN, ND – The University of Mary scored early and often to complete a Homecoming weekend sweep over visiting University of Minnesota in American Collegiate Hockey Association action. Reigning ACHA Player of the Year Zach Garrett lit the lamp twice and Alex Flicek scored a milestone goal in the Marauders 8-2 rout of the Gophers.

After rallying from a 3-1 deficit for a 6-4 win in the Marauders home opener on Saturday, UMary turned the table on Sunday, taking their own 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

Seth Cushing, who posted the final goal Saturday in spectacular fashion, opened the scoring Sunday just 1:43 into the game when he jammed home a rebound in front of the net. A scant five minutes later Drew Lenertz doubled the Marauders lead when he wristed a shot into the net from above the right circle while using a perfect screen from Tanner Eskro. Garrett then pumped home his first goal of the night at 16:47 of the first. Shane Griffin halted the Marauders run of goals when he scored with 91 seconds left in the period for the Gophers.

The Marauders bumped their lead to an insurmountable 5-1 after two on goals by Justin Ohnstad and Garrett.

Minnesota scored the opening goal of the third period but any thought of a comeback by the visitors was shredded by three more goals from the UMary skaters. After Braeden Zaste's second goal of the season, Andrew Heckaman and Flicek both tallied on power play opportunities.

Flicek's goal was the 100th of his Marauders career. He is the first UMary player to reach the century mark. Flicek, who has played all four years at UMary, is also the program's career leader in points.

All-American Kyle Hayden was strong in net, stopping 9-of-10 shots over two periods. Quinn Ackerman played the third period and stopped seven of the eight shots he faced.

Once again the Marauders had an overwhelming edge in shots, firing off 43 to 18 for the Gophers. UMary was also stellar on the power play, finishing 2-of-4 while holding Minnesota scoreless in its two attempts.

The Marauders return to the road next weekend with three games at Liberty University on Oct. 14-16. This is the second straight season the Marauders have travelled to Virginia to play the Flames. Defending national champion UMary last played Liberty in the ACHA semifinals last April.
