Garrett, Flicek goals stun Argos late as Marauders hold on for 5-4 win

MANDAN, ND – Zach Garrett and Alex Flicek struck for a pair of goals just 12 seconds apart in the third period to help the University of Mary hold off a furious third period rally by the University of Providence. The Marauders 5-4 win over the visiting Argos extends UMary's win streak to eight straight games.

Holding a 3-0 lead over the Argos nearing the halfway point of the third period, the Marauders witnessed their lead evaporate in the span of five minutes. Taylor McCall started the Argos run when he found the net at the 8:00 mark. Providence scored again at 8:40 before knotting the game at 3-3 when Will Wright connected for a third straight Argos goal.

The Marauders immediately snatched back the momentum. Taking a feed from Flicek, Garrett buried the puck just ten seconds after the last Argos goal to push UMary back in front 4-3. Then just a scant 12 seconds later, Flicek blasted home a shot from inside the left circle to provide UMary a two-goal advantage and some much needed breathing room.

Not done, the Argos scored once more with 31 seconds left in the game to climb within a single goal. UMary regained control and successfully held Providence out of the net for the remainder of the game to give the Marauders their third straight win over the Argos this season.

UMary opened the scoring on a Cyril Nagurski goal in the first period. The Marauders specialty teams then controlled the second period as Seth Cushing scored a short-handed goal before Garrett delivered on the power play. Flicek provided the primary assist on both the Cushing and Garrett goals.

Flicek finished the game with one goal and three assists. Garrett had a pair of goals. Overall six Marauders contributed points in the game.

Kyle Hayden finished with 28 saves for the Marauders, matching the total of Argos goalkeeper Tristan Lewis.

The Marauders (19-1-2-1) and the Argos wrap up their weekend series at 7 pm on Saturday, Jan. 30. The first 300 fans will be admitted into the game free of charge.
