WILLISTON, ND – Despite a month layoff, the University of Mary hockey team showed no rust on their skates as the Marauders rolled past homestanding Williston State College 10-1.
Alex Flicek posted his first collegiate hat trick and
Zach Garrett distributed five assists.
After last competing on Dec. 12, the Marauders started the new year on fire, scoring four times in each of the first two periods before adding two more goals in the third. Sharp on both ends of the rink, UMary held a 60-22 edge in shots.
The Marauders started the scoring less than seven minutes into the game. Picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone,
Noah Scordato raced down the ice before feeding
Braeden Zaste in the slot. Playing in his home town, the Marauders first year player beat the Tetons goalkeeper between the pads for Zaste's first collegiate goal.
UMary struck again just 70 seconds later when
Andrew Huber found the back of the net.
Marshall Tschida soon followed with a goal before Huber tallied again to provide the Marauders a 4-0 lead at intermission.
After the Tetons scored the first goal of the second period, the Marauders reeled off the final six goals of the game.
Flicek, an All-American last season, tallied twice in the second and once in the third to register his first hat trick with the Marauders. The Bismarck native also added one assist for a four-point game.
Garrett led all players with five points in the game. He had two assists in both the first and second periods before adding his fifth helper in the third.
Huber posted two goals and an assist.
Johnny Witzke and
Tanner Eskro both had a goal and an assist and
Marcus Kopp and
Andrew Heckaman had two assists each. For Kopp, the assists are his first collegiate points.
The Marauders improve to 15-1-2-1. UMary continues its three-game road trip with a visit to Great Falls, MT, to face University of Providence on Friday and Saturday, January 15-16.
