MANDAN, ND – In their final tune-up before the national tournament, the University of Mary hockey team looked in championship form as the Marauders drubbed the visiting University of Jamestown 15-2 on Senior Night. Eleven different Marauders tallied for UMary with a hat trick by
Seth Cushing leading the way.
The Marauders, ranked first in the ACHA Division II West Region and second in the nation, unleashed 66 shots in the game against the Jimmies, who managed just 17 shots of their own in this lopsided contest.
After honoring seniors
Lance Knudson,
Phillip Silveria,
Matt Winkle,
Jonathan Sundell and
Logan Kraft prior to faceoff, UMary came out flying. The Marauders scored early and often, drilling the Jimmies for nine goals in the first period while goaltender
Kyle Hayden kept Jamestown out of the net. UMary generated a 28-6 advantage in shots over the course of the opening period.
Johnny Witzke tallied first at 6:11, the first of two goals for him in the opening stanza.
Kyler Moore quickly followed up with a counter 55 seconds later.
Alex Flicek increased the Marauders lead to 3-0 at 8:47.
UMary then cranked up the pressure.
Mathew Janke scored at 13:53 and Witzke followed up just 16 seconds later.
Not to be outdone,
Seth Cushing and
Logan Kraft needed just 15 second to score back-to-back goals at 15:04 and 15:19.
UMary scored the first four goals of the second period and built a 14-0 lead before Jamestown struck for the first the Jimmies two goals of the night.
Cushing led all players with three goals. Witzke and Jahnke both posted a pair of goals.
Several players had multiple points on the night, led by four from
Alexander Horner (one goal and three assists) and
Cody Shepard (four assists).
Matt Winkle and Moore both tallied three points (one goal, two assists) and
Drew Lenertz (two assists), Flicek (goal, assist),
Andrew Heckaman (two assists), Sundell (two assists), and
Noah Scordato (goal, assist) all had two points.
The Marauders finished 3-for-4 on the power play. Jamestown was unable to take advantage of its one opportunity with a man advantage.
UMary wraps up the regular season with a record of 39-9-0-2 overall and 30-2-0-1 against West Region foes.
Next up for UMary is the ACHA Division 2 National Championships in Frisco, TX, on March 20-24.
