MANDAN, ND – In a classic contest between two of the nation's top American Collegiate Hockey Association teams of any level, visiting Minot State University edged the University of Mary 3-2 in overtime.
Seth Cushing led the Marauders with a pair of goals, including a penalty shot.
The Marauders, ranked second nationally in ACHA Division II and the top seed at the upcoming national tournament out of the West region, once again went toe-to-toe against the ACHA Division I defending national champion Beavers. After falling 5-3 at Minot State on Friday despite holding the edge in shots, UMary twice held the lead in Saturday's rematch.
Cushing opened the scoring on a penalty shot just 5:37 into the game. Just when it appeared that the Marauders would enter the first intermission with a lead, the Beavers pulled even on a power play goal by Adam Wowryk at 19:37.
Following a scoreless second period, the Marauders once again jumped ahead when Cushing scored off feeds from
Dalton Johnson and
Andrew Heckaman 1:47 into the third. This time it didn't take the Beavers long to find the equalizer when Davis Sheldon converted on a man advantage at 3:54.
The game ended quickly in overtime when Sheldon struck again, needing just 35 seconds to find the net.
The Beavers (27-4-0-3) held a 32-29 edge in shots and converted on two of five power play opportunities. The Marauders (38-9-0-2) had five opportunities with a man advantage but were unable to score.
The Marauders close out their 2019-20 regular season schedule when UMary hosts the University of Jamestown ACHA Division II squad on Saturday, Feb. 29. Game time is 7 pm on the Schwan Cadillac Rink at Starion Sports Complex in Mandan, ND.
