MINOT, ND – In their final road game of the regular season, the University of Mary hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision to Minot State University. The defending ACHA Division I champion Beavers struck four times in the second period to pull away from the Marauders, who are ranked second nationally in ACHA Division 2.
The Marauders, who earned the top seed for the ACHA Division 2 national championships from the West Region, are 38-9-0-1 on the season. The Beavers are 26-4-0-3 and are ranked fifth in ACHA Division l.
The Beavers opened the scoring just 6:25 into the game but their advantage was shortlived.
Alex Flicek tallied unassisted at 12:15 to even the game before
Kyler Moore pushed the Marauders into the lead on a goal at 16:47 off assists from Flicek and
Marshall Tschida and UMary skated into intermission leading 2-1.
The tide turned quickly against the Marauders in the second. The Beavers needed just 18 seconds to find the equalizer. Minot State then scored three more times to build an insurmountable lead over UMary at 5-2.
The Marauders closed the gap to two goals after
Zach Garrett found the net at 7:48 of the third period but UMary was unable to climb any closer.
UMary held a 30-26 edge in shots for the game. Both teams penalty kill units proved outstanding as neither team managed a goal with a man advantage, despite nine attempts. UMary was 0-for-3 on the power play while Minot State was 0-for-6.
The home-and-home weekend series concludes on Saturday, Feb. 22, when the Marauders host the Beavers at the Schwan Cadillac Rink at Starion Sports Complex in Mandan, ND. Face off is set for 7 pm.
