JAMESTOWN, N.D. – One day after learning they had earned an automatic berth into the ACHA Division 2 national tournament,
Kyle Hayden and the University of Mary hockey team took down ACHA Division I University of Jamestown 2-1 on the road. The two teams complete their home-and-home weekend series in Mandan on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Hayden stymied the Jimmies attack at every turn, making 41 saves in the game to set a career-high. His previous best was 30. He especially stood tall in the final period, protecting a one-goal lead as Jamestown unleashed 19 shots on goal. The first-year netminder for the Marauders improves his season mark to 17-2-0-1.
On a night when goals were at a premium, the Marauders scored first and last.
The Marauders opened the scoring in the first period. Skating with a man advantage,
Seth Cushing scored the power play goal with assists from
Logan Kraft and
Kyler Moore and a second remaining. UMary finished 1-for-2 on power play opportunities while Jamestown was 0-for-3.
The Jimmies pulled even in the second on a goal by Vladislav Zamzhytski.
Continuing to alternate the scoring,
Alex Flicek broke the tie in the third period. Taking a feed from
Zach Garrett, the Marauders top goal-scorer buried the puck for the game-winning goal.
The Marauders took 29 shots in the game.
UMary, with an overall record of 38-7-0-1 this season, holds a 4-3 edge all-time against the Jimmies ACHA D1 team. The two programs next face off at 7 pm on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Schwan Cadillac Rink at the Starion Sports Complex in Mandan, ND.
