JAMESTOWN, ND – In another back-and-forth battle, the University of Mary dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to homestanding University of Jamestown.
Cody Shepard and
Zach Garrett both posted goals for the Marauders and
Kyle Hayden made 27 saves and added an assist.
Â
The Jamestown victory is the first by the home team in 12 meetings between the Marauders American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 2 squad and the Jimmies ACHA Division 1 team. With wins in the last two meetings, Jamestown now holds a narrow 6-5-1 edge in the series.
Â
UMary slips to 11-1-1-2 (W-L-OL-T). Jamestown is 5-4-3. After four meetings already this season between the ACHA D2 Marauders and the Jimmies ACHA D1 team – including three games in the last nine days - the two programs are not scheduled to play one another again this season. The Marauders do have four games remaining against the Jimmies D2 squad.
Â
It took less than three minutes into the contest for Shepard to provide the Marauders their first and only lead of the game.
Tanner Eskro picked up the lone assist on the goal. With the first period about to expire and the Marauders seemingly on the brink of entering intermission with a lead, the Jimmies Greg Susinski found the net with four seconds remaining on the clock.
Â
The Jimmies doubled their lead early in the second period on a Marquez Ginger goal.
Â
Less than two minutes later, team captain
Zach Garrett retaliated for the Marauders and lit the lamp off feeds from
Johnny Witzke and Hayden at 4:03. The assist by Hayden is the second for a Marauders goalie this season.
Â
With neither team able to dent their opponent's nets in the third period, the two teams advanced to overtime for the second time this season where they would skate three aside, per ACHA D1 rules.
Â
Following scoring chances by both teams early in overtime, Hayden stoned a Jimmies skater coming in all alone on a breakaway to keep UMary alive.Â
Â
After another scoring opportunity for UMary in front of the Jamestown net, the Jimmies created a 2-on-1 breakaway. Ginger, already with one goal on the night, slid the puck across the crease to the left side of the net to Jeb Butler, who redirected the puck into the open net for the game-winning goal at 3:09.
Â
The Marauders remain on the road with a pair of games at Williston State College on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21. UMary's next home game is Saturday, November, 28, when the Marauders host Dakota College of Bottineau in a contest rescheduled following an earlier postponement.
