BISMARCK, ND – Playing his first game of the season, University of Mary forward
Andrew Huber scored the final goal of the game in the third period as the Marauders overcome a two-goal deficit to earn a 4-4 tie with the University of Jamestown's ACHA Division I squad. The Marauders remain undefeated on the season after a weekend sweep of the Jimmies ACHA Division II team.
Down two goals late in the second period,
Zach Garrett pulled the Marauders within 4-3 with just 1:24 remaining in the middle stanza on a power play goal. Taking a direct feed from
Johnny Witzke, the Marauders team captain skated nearly into the crease unobstructed and lifted a shot high into the net. Garrett's goal ended a three-goal run by the Jimmies and provided the homestanding Marauders valuable momentum entering the final period.
Taking advantage of another Jimmies penalty, Witzke skated towards the Jimmies goal and fired a shot from the right circle. Jamestown goalkeeper Tyson Brouwer made the initial save but the rebound bounced directly to Huber. Parked just outside the goal on the left side, the Bismarck, ND, native tapped home the puck into an empty net to tie the game at 4-4. Huber had missed the opening week of the season due to a National Guard commitment.
Despite scoring opportunities by both teams, neither squad could find the net the rest of the game, including a five minute overtime period.
In a rollicking first period, both teams scored twice.
Seth Cushing opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season. Just 27 seconds later, Jamestown's Morgan Venne evened the game at 1-1.
Marshall Tschida soon pushed the Marauders back in front, but the advantage lasted just 39 seconds before Andrew Clark pulled the Jimmies even once again.
Jamestown continued its scoring run with a pair of goals in the second by Reid Wilson and Carter Johnson as the Jimmies pulled in front 4-2.
The Marauders held a 61-48 edge in shots. Brouwer finished with 57 saves for Jamestown, exceeding his total of 47 in the Marauders 4-1 win on Saturday.
Conan Hayton finished the night with 40 saves for UMary.
UMary finished 2-for-5 on the power play while Jamestown was 1-for-2. The Jimmies committed nine penalties totaling 18 minutes while the Marauders were whistled for six penalties for 12 minutes.
After playing the last two games at home, UMary plays its next six games on the road. The Marauders visit Iowa State University on Oct. 9-10 and Waldorf College on Oct. 11 before facing Liberty University in Lynchburg University for three games on Oct. 22-24.
