MANDAN, ND –
Seth Cushing posted a pair of first period goals and
Conan Hayton registered his first shutout as the University of Mary overwhelmed Iowa State University 5-0 to earn a weekend sweep. The Marauders shut out the Cyclones 2-0 on Friday and have held Iowa State without a goal three times this season.
The Marauders defeated the Cyclones in all four meetings between the two teams this year. UMary outscored Iowa State 12-1 after taking a two-game series in Ames, IA, earlier in October.
In the opening game of the weekend was a scoreless battle well into the third period. This afternoon the Marauders scored early and often to walk away with the victory.
Using impressive speed and passing, the Marauders opened the scoring at 8:43. Taking a pass from
Marshall Tschida in front of the Marauders bench,
Alex Flicek raced down the left boards unimpeded. Suddenly on a 2-on-1, Flicek slid the puck through the crease to Cushing, who tapped the puck into the net for his team-leading 12
th goal of the season.
Cushing doubled the Marauders lead less than three minutes later on a power play opportunity. Left alone just outside the faceoff dot to the left of the net, Cushing wristed a blistering shot past Iowa State's Matthew Ayres for his 50
th career goal.
The Marauders flurry of goals continued 71 seconds later when
Zach Garrett scored a shorthanded goal, outracing a Cyclones defender and Ayres to the corner to scoop up the puck before racing around the net and stuffing home his sixth goal of the season.
A wild opening period proved far from over as the Marauders were forced to kill off a 5-on-3 Cyclones advantage late in the period to carry a 3-0 advantage into the first intermission.
UMary salted the game away with an
Andrew Huber goal in the second and one by
Jaren Hugelen in the closing minutes of the game.
Hayton was impressive in goal for the Marauders, warding off 30 shots in the game. Additionally the Aurora, CO, native faced eight Iowa State power play opportunities.
Garrett finished the game with one goal and two assists. Tschida also finished with a pair of assists.
UMary improves to 10-0-0-2 on the season. Iowa State is 2-4.
The Marauders continue their five-game home stand when UMary hosts Dakota College at Bottineau on Saturday, Nov. 7. Faceoff is 7 pm from the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND. The game is closed to spectators due to North Dakota Smart Restart guidelines. Fans are encouraged to watch the games free online at
