Big night by Hayden, pair of 3rd period goals lifts Marauders past Cyclones 2-0

MANDAN, ND – A big night in net by Kyle Hayden and third period goals from Zach Garrett and Drew Lenertz carried the University of Mary to a 2-0 win over visiting Iowa State University. It was the third straight win for the Marauders over the Cyclones this season.

Under pressure all night in a game where goals where hard to find, Hayden was a brick wall for UMary as he stopped everything the Cyclones fired at him. The Marauders second-year player was forced to make a career-high 44 saves in the game, registering at least 14 stops in each period.

This is the second shutout of the season by Hayden with both coming against the Cyclones. In a similar meeting on Oct. 9, Hayden made 26 saves in a 1-0 Marauders win on a night UMary scored the lone goal midway through the third period.

Just as in the first meeting, the Marauders and the Cyclones remained scoreless through two periods.

UMary team captain Zach Garrett finally solved Iowa State netminder Patrick Egdorf midway through the final stanza. Cutting in front of the net from left to right unimpeded, Garrett fired the puck back against the grain just inside the far post at the 7:29 mark. Andrew Heckaman and Jaren Hugelen both earned assists on the goal.

The Marauders sealed the victory less than three minutes later. Skating behind the Cyclones net, Marshall Tschida delivered a pass to Drew Lenertz, left alone just inside the blue line in front of the Iowa State net. Taking a couple strides towards the net, Lenertz fired a long shot from the point that eluded Egdorf and doubled the UMary advantage. Riley Scanlon also earned an assist on the goal.

Two goals proved more than enough for Hayden and the Marauders defense as UMary proceeded to keep the Iowa State offense from finding the net.

The Marauders improve to 9-0-0-2 on the season. The Cyclones are 2-3. The two teams wrap up their weekend series with a 4 pm Halloween meeting on Saturday, October 31. The game is closed to spectators due to North Dakota Smart Restart guidelines and fans are encouraged to watch the games free online at https://nsicnetwork.com/goumary/.
