BISMARCK, ND – Scoring a pair of goals for a second straight night, All-American
Alex Flicek headlined the University of Mary's 4-1 win over the University of Jamestown in the Marauders home opener. The victory completed UMary's home-and-home sweep of Jamestown after knocking off the Jimmies 7-4 on Friday night to open the season.
Flicek commenced the scoring at 16:53 of the first period, finding the net for an even strength goal off assists from defensemen
Drew Lenertz and
Marshall Tschida to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead entering intermission. The Bismarck native then doubled the UMary advantage at 6:31 of the second, with
Kyler Moore and Tschida setting up what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Late in the second period a Braeden Thomas goal pulled the Jimmies within 2-1 but the Marauders wasted no time in answering. Just 76 seconds later,
Seth Cushing gave UMary its two-goal cushion back when he scored unassisted. It was the third goal of the weekend for Cushing.
The Marauders sealed the game when
Justin Ohnstad scored short-handed into an empty net with just under two minutes left in the game.
For a second straight game the Marauders dominated the shot chart, launching 51 shots at the Jimmies net while giving up 19. In the two games UMary held an 89-43 advantage in shots.
Conan Hayton stood tall in goal for the Marauders, making 18 saves in his first game for UMary.
Tschida and Lenertz joined Flicek in recording a two-point night as the two defensemen both had a pair of assists.
Next up for the Marauders (2-0 overall) is another home game against the Jimmies on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when the University of Mary hosts the University of Jamestown's ACHA Division I team.
