JAMESTOWN, ND - A dominant scoring run in the opening two periods of the season carried the University of Mary to a 7-4 road win over the University of Jamestown. Alex Flicek and Seth Cushing both found the net twice for UMary on a night the Marauders rattled off six straight goals, including four on a row on the power play.
The homesteading Jimmies struck first, scoring a scant 17 seconds into the game on the first of two goals in the game by Marquez Ginger.
Flicek knotted the game just under four minutes later before a Mathew Janke goal pushed UMary in front 2-1 at 9:25. The Marauders power then took control of the contest.Â
Skating with a man advantage, Flicek scored for the second time in the game on an unassisted goal with 3:25 remaining in the first period, sending UMary into intermission with a 3-1 advantage.Â
The Marauders momentum carried into the second period. Continuing to take advantage of Jimmies infractions, Andrew Heckaman and Kyler Moore both scored power play goals in the first 3:05 of the middle stanza. A Cushing power play goal at 13:23 closed out the run with the Marauders holding an insurmountable 6-1 lead.Â
The Jimmies made a run at the Marauders, scoring the next three goals before Cushing closed out the contest with a shorthanded goal into an empty net with 19 seconds left in the game.Â
Flicek, a 2019-20 All-American, finished the night with four points, adding a pair of assists to go with his two goals. Cushing added one assist to his pair of goals. Moore (goal and assist) and Marshall Tschida (two assists) also had multi-point games.Â
The Marauders held a 38-24 edge in shots. Both teams had a successful night on the power play with UMary scoring four times in six opportunities with a man advantage and UJ was 2-for-4.Â
The two teams close out their home-and-home weekend series on Saturday, Oct. 3, The Marauders home opener is slated for 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex's Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND.Â
No tickets will be sold for UMary home hockey games at this time and games are not open to the public. Beginning with the Marauders home opener on Saturday, October 3, only 250 spectators are allowed entrance to the games and will be limited to a select number of University of Mary students, staff and faculty and Marauders hockey team family members. University of Mary students will be provided 70 tickets with faculty and staff receiving 30 tickets for each game. An online lottery prior to each contest will determine the ticket recipients. The remaining tickets will be distributed to family members of the Marauders hockey team. Spectators are asked to abide by the University of Mary campus social distancing rules, which can be found at www.umary.edu/COVID.
