AMES, IA - Seth Cushing scored the lone goal of the night midway through the third period and Kyle Hayden turned aside all 26 shots he faced to lead undefeated University of Mary to a 1-0 victory over homestanding Iowa State University.
Despite dominating the shot chart early in a contest that ended after midnight on Saturday morning, the Marauders were unable to find the net through the first two periods in their first-ever game against the Cyclones. UMary outshot Iowa State 13-5 in the opening period and held a narrower 14-11 advantage in the middle stanza.
UMary turned to its two most dangerous scorers to snap the scoreless tie midway through the final period. On a face-off in the Cyclones defensive zone, Alex Flicek won the draw with the puck going to Cushing in the slot. Cushing unleashed a shot past Iowa State goaltender Matthew Ayres at the 10:39 mark for the only goal of the game. For Cushing it was his team-high fifth goal of the season, one more than Flicek.Â
Hayden was solid in net once again for the Marauders, earning his second win of the season in two starts. He finished the night with 26 saves while Ayres had 37 for Iowa State. The shutout was the first for the Marauders this season and the third of Hayden's career in his two seasons at UMary.
There was just one penalty in the game, called against the Cyclones in the second period.Â
The Marauders (3-0-0-1) and the Cyclones (0-1) conclude their two-game weekend series on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 4:15 pm.Â
