Marauders Fall To Golden Bears In First Game Of 2020

ST. PAUL, MN – Cassie Askvig led the way for the University of Mary women's basketball team with a 20 point performance in the Marauders 91-72 loss to the Concordia – St. Paul. The Golden Bears used a big third quarter to put a gap between them and the Marauders. UMary came out in the fourth quarter determined to make a comeback, cutting into the lead, but 66.7 percent shooting from deep by the Golden Bears was too much for the Marauders to overcome. Macy Williams and Lexie Schneider both joined Askvig scoring in the double figures.

With the loss the Marauders fall to 11-5 on the season and 5-2 in the conference. CSP improves to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the Northern Sun.

FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
The Marauders were the ones to get off to a hot start, jumping out to a 15-9 lead less than five minutes into the first quarter. That's when UMary went cold and CSP caught fire with the Bears rallying together a 15-2 run to give themselves a seven point lead. CSP held onto the lead and would head into half up eight. Nine first half points by Askvig and seven by Schneider led the way for the Marauders.

SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
CSP was able to extend their lead to 21 at the end of the third quarter, outscoring UMary 32-19. The Marauders, determined to come back began to chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter. Behind back to back three pointers by Megan Voit, UMary was able to claw their way back to within 12 points but the Golden Bears seemingly always had a response and would not allow the Marauders any closer. Askvig added 11 second half points to total 20 points on the game.
